Pasadena Tour with L.A. Guide Curt
Nestled into the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains and featuring tree-lined streets dotted with turn-of-the-century architecture, it doesn’t get much more picturesque than Pasadena. On this new tour we’ll be joined by professional local guide, Curt for a fascinating journey through this city focusing on its history and architecture, along with its elegant and eclectic shops! We’ll travel sections of Route 66, see City Hall and the luxurious estates along “Millionaire’s Row.” We’ll visit Macy’s, housed in the former Bullocks Pasadena building. Built in 1947 in the Late Moderne architectural style, it was known as "one of the world's most modern buildings" and declared by the American Institute of Architects to be “one of the most outstanding examples of architecture constructed over the last half-century.” Promoted as the "store of tomorrow," it was designed as a “plush” department store with the atmosphere of an exclusive country club and features murals, fireplaces, tilework, many rare woods and other period details. We’ll head to the 3rd floor and search for bargains at Macy’s ‘backstage,’ a new shopping concept that caters to bargain hunters. Unlike outlets, Macy’s ‘backstage’ isn’t filled with clearance items but rather an ever-changing selection of women’s clothing, men’s clothing, gifts, beauty, home decor, gourmet food and other items made specifically for Macy’s backstage as well as closeouts and overruns. We’ll also visit Vroman’s Bookstore, “Southern California’s oldest and largest independent bookstore.” Founded in 1894, this gem has been open since Pasadena streets were home to horses and buggies, and is full of fascinating one-of-a-kind gifts including stationery, pens, jewelry, games, clothing, greeting card and more! We’ll visit Gold Bug, a one-of-a-kind boutique tucked into a lesser-traveled side street in Old Town Pasadena. Inspired by Edgar Allen Poe’s short story "The Gold Bug," a tale in which a gold scarab leads the way to an incredible discovery of buried pirates’ treasure, Gold Bug is a treasure trove of rare and unusual wonders. This 21st century cabinet of curiosities brought to life by more than 100 contemporary artists appeals to visitors intrigued by curious creations and who appreciate the work of master craftsmen. Gold Bug invites visitors to fall into a truly unique gallery experience, presenting works by some of today’s most interesting and emerging designers in a retail space with a museum atmosphere. The one-of-a-kind creations on display come and go daily as the store is in constant evolution. Whether you are searching for a unique piece of jewelry, article of clothing or accessory to add to your wardrobe, an embellishment for your home, or a gift for a special friend or family member, this is the place for you! Enjoy time at leisure for browsing and lunch on your own in historic Old Pasadena, as well as an included sweet treat to top off a memorable day!
