A Tribute to Marilyn Monroe Led by Our “Old Hollywood” Guide
With Academy Museum of Motion Pictures & Hollywood Museum
Activity Level
Celebrate the legacy, legend, and 100th anniversary of cinema’s most enduring icon on this captivating new journey through the glitz and glamour of Marilyn Monroe. Led by Jasmin – a former actress and expert on “Old Hollywood” who has led our tribute tours to Walt Disney, Judy Garland, Lucille Ball and Frank Sinatra – we’ll trace Marilyn’s story from her humble beginnings to eternal stardom. Our narrated driving tour begins as we pass the East Los Angeles hospital where Norma Jeane Mortenson was born on June 1, 1926. Continuing to Hollywood, we’ll see the orphanage where she lived in the 1930s and Paramount Pictures, where she first dreamed of becoming a star. Step inside the historic Max Factor Building to visit the Hollywood Museum, home to the world’s most extensive collection of authentic movie memorabilia. On display are more than 10,000 Hollywood treasures – including props, scripts, rare costumes and personal artifacts from Marilyn herself. A centerpiece highlight is the famous Blondes Only Room, where Max Factor, Hollywood’s “Make-Up King,” transformed a brown-haired beauty into the platinum blonde bombshell who captivated the world. In addition, the museum is celebrating the centennial of her birth with a special exhibit, Marilyn – The Exhibit. We’ll see Marilyn’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and stroll along Hollywood Boulevard to visit the forecourt of the Chinese Theatre (pending movie premiere event) to see where she cast her handprints and footprints in cement at the premiere of Some Like It Hot. Enjoy time at leisure to grab a quick lunch at Ovation Hollywood, the dining and entertainment complex formerly known as Hollywood & Highland. This afternoon, our driving tour continues along Hollywood, Sunset, and Wilshire Boulevards to spotlight famous landmarks woven throughout her life and career. We'll pass the former Hollywood Warner Studios and Twentieth Century Fox Studios, where Marilyn made most of her films, alongside storied haunts like The Knickerbocker (where she and Joe DiMaggio shared quiet rendezvous), the Pantages Theatre (site of her lone Academy Awards appearance), and the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel (famously rumored to be haunted by her ghost). See iconic "Marilyn" sites including Sunset Tower, Chateau Marmont, an apartment she shared with another famous actress, the restaurant where Marilyn and Joe met on a blind first date, and their famed "honeymoon house." We’ll also visit the spectacular Academy Museum of Motion Pictures – the nation’s largest institution devoted to the past, present, and future of moviemaking. In addition to iconic cinematic treasures like Dorothy’s ruby slippers from The Wizard of Oz, Gregory Peck’s annotated To Kill a Mockingbird script, the typewriter used for the screenplay of Hitchcock’s Psycho, the tablets from The Ten Commandments, and R2-D2, we’ll experience the blockbuster special exhibition, Marilyn Monroe: Hollywood Icon. Honoring this milestone anniversary, this exhibition features hundreds of rare photographs, letters, personal items, and legendary screen-worn wardrobes – including her show-stopping pink gown from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and original costumes from Some Like It Hot. Finally, we’ll pay our respects at the peaceful cemetery where Marilyn is entombed near cherished friends and colleagues, including Jack Lemmon, Billy Wilder, and Dean Martin. This exclusive tour devoted to the “Blonde Bombshell” promises to be an unforgettable day tracing the life of a legendary star who left us far too soon. This tour involves moderate walking. All sights and all items on display at the museums are subject to change.
