Escape with us up the California coast and enter a world frozen in time on this new tour that offers the exclusive opportunity to experience one of the least visited, yet most whispered about landmarks on the California coast – the Clark Estate, known as “Bellosguardo.” Perched atop a Santa Barbara bluff with panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and Channel Islands, Bellosguardo Mansion stands as a silent testament to a bygone era of immense wealth and profound seclusion. For more than 60 years, this sprawling 24-acre estate remained one of California's most enigmatic landmarks, its gates locked, and its story shrouded in mystery. It has endured the tests of time; the house and grounds locked in pristine isolation. Now, for the first time, the doors have been “slightly” opened so a limited number of guests in small groups can explore this 27,000 square foot mansion and get a glimpse into the life of its last owner, the reclusive heiress Huguette Clark. The mansion was built in the 1930s as a summer home by Huguette’s mother, Anna, widow of copper king, Senator William Andrews Clark. After her mother's death, Huguette inherited the property but last visited in the 1950s. This long period of disuse, coupled with Huguette's decision to live the last decades of her life in New York, fueled immense public curiosity and contributed to the mansion's legendary status, a story chronicled in the bestselling book Empty Mansions: The Mysterious Life of Huguette Clark and the Spending of a Great American Fortune. Today, Bellosguardo stands as Huguette left it so many years ago, a pristine monument – impeccably maintained and protected – to the mother she loved. Enjoy time at leisure to explore the gardens and the mansion’s fully furnished ground floor, where knowledgeable docents will share the secrets and stories of the Clark family and this mansion that stands as a time capsule of a bygone era of wealth and artistry. Prior, enjoy time at leisure for lunch on your own at the various eateries along the State Street Promenade and at Paseo Nuevo, downtown Santa Barbara’s Mediterranean-style, outdoor shopping and dining center.
To ensure a healthy and enjoyable travel experience for our guests, this tour will operate with additional health & wellness measures in place.
