This nostalgic San Diego experience begins with a scenic drive down the coast to San Diego’s North Park neighborhood where we’ll enjoy an included early lunch (approximately 11:00 a.m.) with choice of entrée (chicken pot pie, vegetable pot pie or crispy chicken salad) at the San Diego Chicken Pie Shop. This local institution opened in 1938 and has used the same homestyle recipe for its famous chicken pot pies ever since. Stuffed with chicken, turkey, and smothered in savory gravy, the pot pie comes with whipped potatoes, a side of vegetables, cole slaw, a pie shop roll and freshly baked dessert pie. This afternoon we’ll continue to the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum in Campo, in the foothills east of San Diego (elevation 2,700’). “All aboard” the Golden State train for a 45-minute, roundtrip journey through the rugged backcountry of east San Diego County toward the Mexico border. Sit back, relax and enjoy the views of the rural landscape as we travel aboard this vintage train that follows the same short line route as the historic San Diego and Arizona Railway. Enjoy time to explore the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum which features a variety of trains and a living history approach to preserving the historic legacy, cultural landscape and memorable experience of railroading in the Pacific Southwest.
