Escape for the day to north San Diego County, known not only for its spectacular beauty and climate, but also its links to early California history and Old Hollywood. This new experience begins at the San Diego Botanic Garden (formerly Quail Botanical Gardens), a 37-acre urban oasis with meandering walking trails and spectacular ocean views. The Garden is home to 5,300 different plant species and 29 uniquely themed gardens that represent 15 different habitat regions of the world. Enjoy time at leisure exploring this natural wonderland, stopping to admire the restful vistas, flowering trees, majestic palms and tropical rainforest. Enjoy an included lunch with choice of entrée and dessert at Casa De Bandini, an award-winning Mexican restaurant that features authentic Mexican food, fresh homemade tortillas, and décor depicting Colonial Mexico. This afternoon, we’ll visit the Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park, the 27-acre magnificently landscaped park located in a secluded canyon. In 1937, actor and conservationist Leo Carrillo purchased the land and built a retreat, working ranch and tribute to Old California culture and architecture, re-creating an Old California-style rancho. This was at the height of his career which included appearances in 15 major stage plays and more than 90 motion pictures and television shows including the pioneering television series, The Cisco Kid, where he played Pancho, the mischievous sidekick. Also known as "Carlsbad's Sleeping Beauty," the site is now a registered California Historical Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In addition to a docent-guided tour of Leo Carrillo’s Spanish-style ranch house that was frequented by him and his friends until 1960, we’ll enjoy time at leisure exploring this historic park that features antique windmills, a reflecting pool and 18 of the original hand-crafted adobe and wood buildings including the hacienda, barn, stables and work sheds, providing a unique “Old California” experience. This tour involves moderate walking over uneven terrain.
To ensure a healthy and enjoyable travel experience for our guests, this tour will operate with additional health and safety measures in place.
