This new fashion-focused experience that features two unique Los Angeles museums begins in downtown L.A. at ASU FIDM, the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising. We’ll visit the ASU FIDM campus for a behind-the-scenes tour of the ASU FIDM Museum, housing a significant collection of fashion and costume pieces that offer valuable insights into the fashion history. A docent-guided tour will showcase a selection of garments from the 18th century to the present from the museum’s permanent collection. Examine garments from the museum’s hands-on study collection and learn about this renowned school that focuses on creative industries such as fashion design, merchandising, interior design, graphic design, and more. Enjoy time at leisure for lunch on your own at The Original Farmers Market or The Grove L.A., offering a variety of eateries and an open-air environment pulsing with energy. This afternoon we’ll experience the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures – the largest institution in the U.S. devoted to the arts, sciences, and artists of moviemaking! Reconnect with cinema classics and discover new favorites as you explore this museum that celebrates the past, present, and future of moviemaking. It’s filled with eye-catching, innovative exhibits dedicated to the history of film and showcases iconic movie memorabilia. On display for a limited time, Color in Motion: Chromatic Explorations of Cinema, examines color's role in film, from its technological evolution to its emotional impact and use as a storytelling tool. The special exhibition features six galleries, each exploring a different aspect of film color, with immersive installations showcasing items from the silent era to the digital age – cameras, projectors, costumes, props, animation cels, and posters. Key highlights include Dorthy’s ruby slippers from The Wizard of Oz, a green costume worn by Kim Novak in Vertigo, the red jacket worn by Jack Nicholson in The Shining and a blue costume worn by Jamie Foxx in Django Unchained. The Stories of Cinema galleries showcase a variety of experiences and perspectives on the arts and sciences of moviemaking, as well as the process behind making films. Currently on display, Identity – Costume Design, showcases original costumes from films like Calamity Jane, Giant, Hello Dolly! and Titanic. Academy Awards History features original program covers, winning envelopes, congratulatory telegrams, and a menu from the first ceremony, as well as memorable Oscars fashion statements, from Billy Porter’s tuxedo gown and Ryan Gosling’s hot pink outfit worn during his “I’m Just Ken” Oscars performance, to the elegant dress Kathryn Bigelow wore when she made history as the first woman to receive the Academy Award for Best Directing. Items on display at the Academy Museum are subject to change. While docent-guided tours of the museum are unavailable, you can download the free Academy Museum app to your smart device and bring your own headphones to enjoy a free audio-guided tour of the museum. The Oscars Experience simulation requires a separate ticket available for purchase on-site.
