Take a step back in time to the roaring 1920s of Los Angeles, the city’s golden era of theater, architecture, culture, and explosive growth. Our beloved, professional local guide, Johnathon, will provide insightful narration and charming anecdotes as we explore downtown's most dazzling architectural treasures and iconic landmarks, celebrating the sleek geometry, mythic design, and boundless optimism of one of Southern California’s major boom era. A guided tour of the Los Angeles Central Library – currently celebrating its 100th anniversary – showcases a spectacular triumph that brilliantly fuses ancient Egyptian, Byzantine, and modern Art Deco styles. Designed by Bertram Goodhue and opened in 1926, the building's unadorned concrete and towering, skyscraper-like profile helped usher in the era of modern architecture. Marvel at the 1930 Title Guarantee and Trust Building, a Gothic-inspired Art Deco masterpiece listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Step into the soaring lobby of the CalEdison Building (originally the Southern California Edison Company Building) to view its 17 types of imported marble and Hugo Ballin’s striking mural, The Power of Water and Light. Admire the opulent, French-inspired Oviatt Building – home to the retro Cicada Club – with its three-ton brass elevator doors. We’ll pause for photos at the legendary Eastern Columbia Building, a vibrant turquoise and gold-leaf "Jewel of Downtown" topped by a spectacular clock tower. We’ll explore the historic Broadway Theater District, home to the largest concentration of historic movie palaces in the nation, to learn how venues like the Beaux-Arts Orpheum Theatre, the Spanish Gothic United Artists Theater (built by Hollywood legends Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks), and the French Baroque-inspired Los Angeles Theatre, all defined the Roaring Twenties. We’ll drive past the historic financial district that was once hailed, “The Wall Street of the West." We’ll step inside The Biltmore, a legendary 1923 landmark that served as the cradle of Hollywood glamour while hosting the early Academy Awards amidst its hand-painted frescoed ceilings and Spanish-Italian Renaissance opulence. We’ll take a nostalgic ride on the historic Angels Flight Railway, which has faithfully transported passengers since 1901. Known as the world’s shortest railway, it’s estimated the recently restored, 125-year-old funicular has given more than 100 million rides to the top of Bunker Hill on its hillside track! Enjoy time at leisure for lunch on your own and an included sweet treat among the vibrant, multicultural food stalls of the 108-year-old Grand Central Market. This tour involves moderate walking. All sights subject to change.
