Is it antique, vintage or retro? Or perhaps it’s retro antique, modern vintage or classic old-fashioned? On this fashionably nostalgic and retrospective experience, professional L.A. guide Curt will explain the difference as he leads the way on this new tour that features a step back in time and an appreciation of L.A.'s timeless allure. We’ll visit the illustrious William Andrews Clark Memorial Library – the 1926 Beaux Arts-style building that occupies an entire city block in L.A.’s West Adams neighborhood. This cornerstone of literary history houses one of the world’s most renowned collections of rare books and manuscripts including an unparalleled Oscar Wilde anthology, where each page echoes tales of an era dripping in grandeur. You’ll stand in awe of the marble flooring, colorful frescoes, intricately carved walls and copper bookshelves that evoke the Baroque palaces of Europe. A driving tour of downtown L.A. will showcase the unique blend of Art Deco, Italian Renaissance and Beaux Arts architectural styles. In L.A.’s Arts District we’ll enjoy an included lunch with choice of entrée (steak, pulled pork, crispy chicken or vegetarian sandwich), at Bike Shed Moto Co. Housed in a massive warehouse built in 1945, this motorcycle-influenced café is vintage charm – red brick, plush leather, rustic exposed beams and poured cement along with modern touches like flashy artwork, skylights, and rare vintage motorcycles hanging around. At the Museum of Neon Art we’ll take a journey back in time into a visual realm of flashing lights and nostalgic eras like Hollywood Boulevard from the 1950s. The warm, electric glow and mid-century charm of neon signs are enduring features of Los Angeles’ historic buildings, and this glowing sanctuary showcases that brilliant history through the vivid vintage treasures from iconic L.A. establishments. In Pasadena we’ll visit Macy’s, housed in the former Bullocks Pasadena building. Built in 1947 in the Late Moderne architectural style, it was known as "one of the world's most modern buildings" and declared by the American Institute of Architects to be “one of the most outstanding examples of architecture constructed over the last half-century.” Promoted as the "store of tomorrow," it was designed as a “plush” department store with the atmosphere of an exclusive country club and features murals, fireplaces, tilework, many rare woods and other period details. We’ll top off the day with an included sweet treat that is old-fashioned yet perfectly modern! This tour involves moderate walking. All sights subject to change.
