Escape to the coast for a delightful tour discovering unique and historic sites along with an exquisite tea lunch. We’ll travel north along the Palos Verdes coastline to Wayfarers Chapel, known as the “The Glass Church.” Designed by renowned organic architect Lloyd Wright – son of Frank Lloyd Wright – the soaring stone and glass structure is nestled in a grove of towering redwoods overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Listed on the National Registry of Historic Places, the chapel and the 3 ½ acres of gardens and forest that surround it provide a peaceful sanctuary in which to relax and enjoy. We continue to South Coast Botanic Garden, the urban oasis known as “The Jewel of the Palos Verdes Peninsula.” This 87-acre botanic garden has more than 2,500 different species of plants organized into themed gardens including a Mediterranean Garden, Rose Garden, Garden for the Senses, Cactus Garden, Fuchsia Garden, Dahlia Garden, Herb Garden, and Japanese Garden. Enjoy time at leisure to wander the trails through the gardens, past a scenic lake and charming koi pond, and explore the gift shop that offers a variety of unique plants and gifts. This afternoon we’ll enjoy an exclusive, private tea lunch inside the historic Bembridge House, a magnificent, 18-room Queen Anne Victorian listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The house is a highly ornate example of late Victorian architecture, and both the exterior and interior exemplify the finest accomplishments of turn-of-the-century architectural designers and craftsmen. But this Long Beach house built in 1906 is more than a historic treasure, it’s a time capsule – it amazingly looks (on the outside and inside) just as it did when Dorothy Rankin Bembridge moved into the home in 1918. As we step through the doors, you’ll marvel at the home’s pristine original condition and the many original furnishings dating from the early 1900s – many of which are the personal effects of its longtime owner. We’ll gather in the dining room and parlor and enjoy a tea lunch that features scones with clotted cream and jams, finger sandwiches, quiche, a side salad and assorted sweets and cookies served on beautiful dishes from the time period.
