Enjoy a 6-night, single-hotel stay on Cape Cod while exploring the best of coastal Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Explore the historic Freedom Trail in Boston, the magnificent Breakers Mansion in Newport, the historic towns of Plymouth, Sandwich and Provincetown and the island lifestyle on Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket on this classic tour that provides a quintessential New England summer experience.
Optional transfers from our departure points this morning will have us at LAX for our scheduled non-stop flight arriving in Boston late this afternoon. Those guests making their own flight arrangements can request the group’s flight schedule to coordinate a flight arrival time that would allow them to be included on the complimentary transfer to the hotel. Welcome to the “Bay State” of Massachusetts. We’ll board a deluxe motorcoach and travel south to Cape Cod where we’ll enjoy a single-hotel stay at an upscale, centrally located hotel in Hyannis. Become acquainted with your fellow travelers at an included welcome dinner. (Dinner)
This morning we’ll be joined by a local guide and board a ferry for Nantucket – the “faraway island.” The island still looks much as it did during its heyday as a prosperous whaling and shipping port of the 1800s, with cedar-shingled homes, elegant whaling mansions and cobblestone streets. We’ll enjoy a guided Nantucket driving tour of this breathtaking island that features rolling farmland, quiet villages, an historic lighthouse and pounding surf. Enjoy the afternoon at leisure for lunch and browsing in the upscale boutiques and art galleries in the downtown area which is the largest National Historic Landmark District in the country, featuring over 800 original buildings built prior to 1800. The National Park Service cites Nantucket as the “finest surviving architectural and environmental example of a late 18th and early 19th century New England seaport town.” We return to Hyannis this evening with an included lobster dinner (with alternate entrée available) at a locals’ favorite. (Breakfast, Dinner)
We’ll be joined by a local guide this morning and board a ferry for Martha’s Vineyard, the longtime New England summer colony. On a Martha’s Vineyard driving tour we’ll learn about the history and lifestyles of the islanders as we pass harbor towns, picturesque farmland and sandy beaches. In Oak Bluffs we’ll stroll through “Cottage City” and admire the brightly painted “gingerbread” cottages with decorative trim. Enjoy time at leisure in Edgartown, where the stately whaling captains’ mansions still line the streets. This quintessential New England hamlet stood in as “Amity Island” in the movie, Jaws. We return to Hyannis and catch a glimpse of the “Camelot” era when we travel past the Kennedy Compound and St. Francis Xavier, known as the ‘Kennedy Church.’ We’ll pay our respects at the John F. Kennedy Memorial and Korean War Memorial prior to an included dinner at a locals’ favorite. (Breakfast, Dinner)
This morning we’ll travel to Newport, Rhode Island – famous not only for its yachting and maritime history, but for the spectacular summer homes built here during America’s Gilded Age. We’ll be joined by a local guide and embark on a Newport driving tour that will take us along tree-lined Bellevue Avenue and Ten Mile Drive where we’ll gaze in amazement at the magnificent mansions. Enjoy time at leisure for browsing and lunch on your own in Newport’s bustling downtown, a historic and charming waterfront district with cobblestone streets, antique stores, art galleries, specialty shops and restaurants. This afternoon we’ll tour the Vanderbilt’s famous Breakers Mansion – an 11 acre estate on Ochre Point, built for the grandson of Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt. Considered the grandest of Newport’s summer cottages and a symbol of the Vanderbilt’s social and financial preeminence in turn-of-the-century America, the mansion features 70 rooms, a 2 1⁄2 story central Great Hall, and has rare marble, alabaster and gilded wood throughout. Enjoy an included dinner at a locals’ favorite this evening. (Breakfast, Dinner)
This morning we’ll be joined by a local guide as we travel to Plymouth, “America’s Hometown.” Learn about the Pilgrim Landing here in 1620 and visit both Plymouth Rock and the National Monument to the Forefathers. Tour Mayflower II – the full-scale reproduction of the Pilgrim’s famed ship. Following time at leisure for browsing and lunch on your own along Plymouth’s waterfront, we’ll enjoy a narrated lobstering cruise in the calm waters of Plymouth Harbor to see how lobsters are harvested. We continue to historic Sandwich, Cape Cod’s oldest town, where we’ll see the Hoxie House (the Cape’s oldest home circa 1637) and the Dexter Grist Mill. We’ll visit the Cape Cod Canal Visitor Center to learn about the rich history, fascinating features and vigilant operation of the Cape Cod Canal. Enjoy an included dinner at the award-winning Daniel Webster Inn, an historic 18th century inn that has been serving patrons for 350 years! (Breakfast, Dinner)
This morning we’ll be joined by a local guide as we travel along historic Route 6A, the “Old King’s Highway” the length of the Cape Cod to “land’s end” – Provincetown, at the tip of the Cape. Enjoy time at leisure for lunch on your own and browsing the galleries and boutiques in this historic fishing port and haven for artists. This afternoon we’ll visit the Cape Cod National Seashore Visitor Center and then board enclosed “dune taxis” for a fun and informative Cape Cod National Seashore dunes tour through, over and around these sand dunes situated along the largest protected coastline in the country. We return to Hyannis with the evening at leisure and dinner on your own. (Breakfast)
We’ll travel north this morning and visit the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum. Browse the museum’s exhibits focused on the early U.S. Space Program, Kennedy’s presidential campaign, the Kennedy Family and Jackie Kennedy Onassis. We continue to Boston, and enjoy an included lunch at a locals’ favorite. This afternoon we’ll be joined by a local guide for a brief driving tour of Boston – the birthplace of American liberty. We’ll follow in the footsteps of American history as we see sights along the Freedom Trail including Boston Common and the Old State House – site of the Boston Massacre. Our scheduled nonstop flight from Boston late this afternoon will have us back at LAX tonight. Those guests making their own flight arrangements can request the group’s flight schedule to coordinate a flight departure time that would allow them to be included on the complimentary transfer to the airport. Back in Los Angeles, those with pre-arranged transfers will be returned to their respective destinations. (Breakfast, Lunch)
