Take a moment to imagine this...rugged, glacial landscapes, the feeling of delight if you spot a grizzly bear with a cub or two in tow, the majestic sight of Mt. Denali as you ride aboard the famous Alaska Railroad...this is the essence of Alaska. On this adventure of a lifetime, led by an Alaskan tour director, you’ll discover our nation’s largest and perhaps most beautiful natural wonder while exploring Fairbanks, Anchorage and Denali National Park via train, riverboat and motorcoach at the time of year when the weather is most favorable.
Optional transfers from our departure points this morning will have you at the Los Angeles International Airport for a connecting flight to Fairbanks, the largest city in Alaska’s interior. Guests making their own flight arrangements may arrive in Fairbanks at any time and still take advantage of the included meet and greet at the airport followed by an included transfer from the airport to the hotel. Upon arrival at the hotel, begin a two-night stay.
Following an included breakfast, depart the hotel with your Alaskan tour director and begin a driving tour of Fairbanks – known to Alaskans as the “Golden Heart City.” Located near the confluence of the Tanana and Chena Rivers, Fairbanks is Alaska’s second largest city. Learn how the gold rush affected Alaska’s interior during a visit to the Museum of the North at the University of Alaska. Enjoy time at leisure for browsing and lunch on your own in Fairbanks’ charming downtown area. This afternoon, board a sternwheeler for a 3-hour cruise on the Chena River to experience what life was like when traditional riverboats plied the waterways of Alaska’s interior during the late 1800s. Enjoy an included, authentic salmon bake dinner this evening. (Breakfast, Dinner)
Following an included breakfast, continue south by motorcoach into Denali National Park (elevation, 4,000 feet). Denali National Park & Preserve features North America’s highest mountain, Mt. Denali (formerly Mt. McKinley) and is one of the world’s last unspoiled frontiers. The Park features a myriad of spectacular mountains and many large glaciers. Enjoy the afternoon exploring this pristine area by participating in a complimentary park service activity or optional excursions available for additional fees. Optional excursions include white water rafting or a scenic float trip, an ATV wilderness adventure, flight-seeing Mt. Denali aboard either a helicopter or fixed wing aircraft, fly fishing, a Denali wilderness walking tour with a naturalist, a Denali bike tour, a Denali photo tour or visit Husky Homestead, home of Iditarod Champion Jeff King to get a behind-the-scenes look at what goes into creating a championship Iditarod team and carving a life in Alaska’s Interior. Note that all optional excursions are subject to change and all excursions may not be available. All bookings/payments for the optional excursions are made with your tour director while on tour. Late this afternoon, arrive at your resort located at the entrance to Denali National Park to begin a two-night stay. This evening, an optional dinner show is available for an additional $70 p.p. (payable to your tour director). This rollicking musical comedy is performed nightly in a rustic camp house reminiscent of the gold rush era. (Breakfast)
Following an included breakfast, you’ll travel into Denali National Park on a Tundra Wilderness Tour that takes you deep into the wilds of Denali National Park, a six-million-acre UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Traveling through forest and alpine tundra and over high mountain passes, you may see moose, caribou, Dall sheep, wolves and grizzly bears and, depending on weather and visibility, awe-inspiring Denali itself – North America’s highest peak at 20,310 feet! This 6-8 hour narrated journey provides an incredible insight into the animals, flora and fauna. Return to the resort in the late afternoon with the balance of the evening at leisure. (Breakfast)
Enjoy an included breakfast followed by a short transfer to the Denali Park Train Depot where you’ll board the deluxe railcars of Alaska Railroad’s Denali Star. Sit back, relax and enjoy a four-hour rail journey south through some of the most scenic and rugged territory in Alaska. Just south of Denali, Broad Pass offers majestic views of the Alaska Range in all directions. North of Talkeetna, the tracks veer away from the road system and into the backcountry Hurricane area – a region that offers views of the snaking Indian River, the occasional remote cabin and the expansive sight of Hurricane Gulch from the top of a 296-foot bridge. Later, arrive in the quaint, climbing town of Talkeetna. Talkeetna’s downtown is classified as a National Historic Site, with buildings dating from the early 1900s. Here, we’ll reboard the motorcoach and continue south to Anchorage. Just south of Talkeetna, keep your eyes open for a glimpse of the majestic Mt. Denali or black bears along the banks of the Susitna River. This evening, enjoy an included farewell dinner and share tales from the road with your traveling companions before an overnight stay in Anchorage. (Breakfast, Dinner)
Enjoy an included breakfast followed by an included transfer to the Anchorage International Airport and a return flight to Los Angeles. Guests making their own flight arrangements may depart from the Anchorage International Airport at any time today. Back in Los Angeles, those with pre-arranged transfers will be returned to their respective drop-off destinations with many fond memories of this incredible Alaskan adventure. (Breakfast)
