This new San Diego exploration begins where San Diego was first discovered by Europeans – at picturesque Cabrillo National Monument. Located at the southern tip of the Point Loma Peninsula and offering spectacular views of San Diego Bay, this monument commemorates the landing of Portuguese explorer, Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo at San Diego Bay in 1542. Enjoy time at leisure to browse the park store and grounds featuring the iconic Cabrillo Statue, Old Point Loma Lighthouse, Assistant Keeper’s Quarter (with lighthouse exhibit), Kelp Forest and Whale Overlook and the Coast Defenses dating back to World War II. Our journey continues to Old Town San Diego – once San Diego’s “downtown,” Old Town is still the historic heart of the city. Enjoy time at leisure for browsing and lunch on your own at a variety of eateries, most offering outdoor dining. We’ll then visit a charming, family-owned and operated candle shop in Old Town State Historic Park for a unique opportunity to experience candle making. During this hands-on activity with instructions on how to dip properly, you will create your very own candle, choosing both the shape and colors. This one-of-a-kind keepsake from the birthplace of California can be taken home as a souvenir or given as a gift – hint, hint Mother’s Day! This afternoon we continue to San Diego’s Embarcadero and step aboard the USS Midway aircraft carrier. Here, we’ll follow in the footsteps of 225,000 Midway sailors as we relive 50 years of world history aboard America’s longest-serving aircraft carrier. Enjoy time at leisure to explore this ship that was once a “floating city at sea,” with an included audio tour narrated by Midway sailors.Experience what life was like at sea as you explore the crew’s sleeping quarters, the massive galley, engine room, jail, officer’s quarters, post office, machine shops, the pilot’s ready rooms, and the bridge located high in the island overlooking the flight deck. As you walk the flight deck, you’ll get up-close and personal with the collection of 29 restored aircraft while admiring the spectacular views of the San Diego skyline, San Diego Bay, the Coronado Bridge and active U.S. Navy ships! This tour involves moderate walking, including stairs, aboard theUSSMidway.
