Professional step-on guide, Curt – who is not only a history buff with an expertise on the evolution of Los Angeles, but also a true foodie known for his creative and memorable food adventures – leads the way on this new delicious tasting tour. Today we focus on those nostalgic and classic L.A. dishes that have stood the test of time and become culinary icons, featured on menus across the country and around the world. At The Hat, we’ll savor their “world famous pastrami” sandwich which locals tout as the best in L.A. since 1951! The Original Tommy’sHamburgers was founded in 1946 by Tom Koulax. While it took some time before the public discovered his small stand, his dedication toward quality and fast service finally paid off and by the mid-1950’s the little stand gained a reputation among burger lovers from all over. Here we’ll enjoy a taste of a hamburger covered in their famous chili. Philippe the Originalwas opened by Philippe Mathieu in 1908 and has been at its current location on the edge of Chinatown since 1951. Philippe’s “official” version of the legend says the French Dip was born when Mathieu accidentally dropped a French roll into a roasting pan filled with drippings, and the policeman who ordered the sandwich agreed to eat it anyway and the French dipped sandwich was born – a taste of this classic sandwich will have you hooked! Paul and Betty Pink foundedPink’s Hot Dogsin 1939 as a pushcart near the corner of La Brea and Melrose in Hollywood. Their restaurant opened on North La Brea in 1946 with a 10-cent chili dog made with Betty’s homemade recipe, and guests from around the world have been lining up ever since and now you’ll get your chance to enjoy a Pink’s dog! The story of Littlejohn’s Candies begins in the 1920s when Mr. and Mrs. Littlejohn started making mouthwatering batches of English Toffee and selling them to the elite of Los Angeles. The business was a huge success and the Littlejohn’s name quickly became synonymous with high-quality confections and has been a Los Angeles favorite ever since. All visits subject to change. This tour involves moderate walking.
