Escape for the day to the charming, gold-mining town of Julian – nestled among oak and pine forests in the beautiful Cuyamaca Mountains. This morning we’ll stop in Santa Ysabel at Dudley’s California Bakery, everyone’s favorite backcountry bakery offering 43 different types of freshly baked bread, pastries, cookies and pies, all available for purchase. We continue along the mountain roads to Julian, San Diego’s historic mountain town that could be described “as American as apple pie” (elevation 4,200’). The entire town is a designated historic district, and the shops and restaurants are housed in Victorian-style buildings dating back to the 1870s. We’ll enjoy an included “Apple Blossom Tea” hosted by the Julian Woman’s Club. This beloved organization, founded more than 100 years ago, not only created the Julian Pioneer Museum, but hosts special, private events like this to attract visitors to this historic town and raise funds to support a variety of philanthropic projects including high school scholarships and programs for children. The English-style afternoon tea, set in their charming clubhouse, includes a variety of finger sandwiches, seasonal fruit, scones with jam, curd and whipped cream, desserts and tea. Enjoy time at leisure this afternoon browsing Julian’s unique boutiques, and pie shops selling a variety of apple pies and apple ciders to take home. |
