On this unique L.A. adventure, we’ll explore several of the city’s much loved, yet lesser-known gems. First, enjoy a two-hour, docent-guided tour of the Holyland Exhibition, founded in 1924 by a man some say was the real-life inspiration for Indiana Jones. His love affair for the Holyland and the preservation of its ancient past led to a number of expeditions in search of the Golden Ark of the Covenant. Unlike the film hero, he never discovered the Ark but his love affair with the Holyland resulted in an incredible collection of artifacts from Syria, Jordan, Egypt, Cyprus and Palestine. Items range from small pieces like ancient oil lamps, coins, ivory, Armenian ceramics and Mideastern jewelry to large lavish tapestries, ornate furniture, a mummy casket and a 2,700-year-old Egyptian sarcophagus. Guides will showcase the exhibits and tell the story of the items as they relate to the Bible and ancient traditions and customs. We’ll continue to Canter’s Deli, the L.A. landmark that has offered an authentic Jewish deli-style experience unlike anywhere else on the West Coast since 1931. Your included lunch here includes choice of sandwich, choice of side and dessert. This afternoon we’ll visit the Monastery of the Angels, a hidden spiritual oasis in Hollywood where wonderful hand-dipped chocolates, pumpkin bread and other goodies are available for purchase. Holyland Exhibition is a historic site and stairs are necessary to reach the second level. |
