Day By Day Itinerary:
Day 1
Thursday, 10/21/2021 - Coastal Train Ride, Monterey
We set out from our departure points this morning aboard a deluxe motorcoach and travel to downtown Los Angeles’ Union Station to board Amtrak’s Coast Starlight for a memorable five-hour rail journey along California’s spectacular coastline. You are free to move around the train, get lunch from the snack bar or enjoy a waiter-served lunch on your own in the dining car (based on availability). Check out the view from the observation car or just relax in your reclining seat. Upon arrival in San Luis Obispo, we’ll reboard our motorcoach and continue north to the Monterey Peninsula. We’ll enjoy an overnight stay at an upscale, bay-front, AAA Four Diamond hotel adjacent to Fisherman’s Wharf in Old Monterey. Enjoy the balance of the evening at leisure with dinner on your own.
Day 2
Friday, 10/22/2021 - Redwoods, Sacramento
Following an included breakfast, we’ll continue north to the Santa Cruz Mountains and arrive at Roaring Camp which resembles a 1880s logging town. Shop in the old-fashioned general store or explore vintage western structures, such as an opera house, depot and covered bridge. We’ll board the Redwood Forest Steam Train and ride through a forest of towering coastal California Redwoods to Bear Mountain. We continue east by motorcoach to Sacramento to begin a two-night stay at a deluxe hotel adjacent to the California State Capitol.
Day 3
Saturday, 10/23/2021 - Sacramento
Following an included breakfast, we’ll be joined by a local guide and listen to the legends that made Sacramento famous on a driving tour of Sacramento. We’ll make stops at some of the city’s historic landmarks including Sutter’s Fort, the Stanford Mansion, and the Governors Mansion. Learn about the legendary past of California’s capital city, from the first days of the Gold Rush to the booming metropolis that is here today. At the stunning California State Capitol, we’ll tour the headquarters of the 5th largest economy in the world and the office of many historic figures. We’ll visit Old Sacramento, the waterfront district that sprang up overnight during the early days of “gold fever.” With more than 50 Gold Rush-era buildings, it holds the greatest concentration of buildings of historic value than any area of similar size in the West. Learn how trains have shaped people’s lives, the economy, and the unique culture of California and the West while visiting the California State Railroad Museum – the finest and most visited museum of its kind in North America. Discover why the romance of rail travel still holds a special charm, as it conjures up images of fine dining with distinctive railroad china, sparkling crystal, and polished silver aboard a 1930s dining car. Feel the gentle motion of the train while listening to sounds of high-speed night travel on a typical 1929 sleeping car. Learn about the fast-paced routine of sorting mail on a postal car, and then gaze in awe at the sheer magnitude of Locomotive No. 4294 – one million pounds of steel! Enjoy time at leisure to walk along the wooden sidewalks and shop in Old Sacramento. Enjoy an included dinner this evening at a locals’ favorite.
Day 4
Sunday, 10/24/2021 - California Zephyr Train to Reno
After an included breakfast, it’s all aboard the California Zephyr for a five-hour rail journey. Ask any train aficionado and they’ll tell you that one of the most beautiful train trips in North America is aboard the California Zephyr.  As you climb to the sky through the breathtakingly beautiful Sierra Nevada, you’ll surely agree. See the stunningly picturesque and historic Donner Lake. During the winter of 1846-47, the Donner Party, led by George and Jacob Donner, was stranded in a snow storm near the eastern shore of the lake. As we descend from the mountains, we’ll soon arrive in Reno, Nevada – known as “The Biggest Little City in the World.” Here, we’ll check into our premier casino resort hotel for a two-night stay. Reno is known for its Basque population and tonight we’ll enjoy an included traditional family-style Basque dinner at a locals’ favorite.
Day 5
Monday, 10/25/2021 - Carson City, Virginia City, Reno
Following an included breakfast, we’ll be joined by a local guide for a full day touring Reno, Carson City and Virginia City. In Carson City we’ll tour the Nevada State Capitol – constructed of native sandstone, it is the second oldest capitol building west of the Mississippi River. We continue to Virginia City which at its peak, was a boisterous town, filled with men from everywhere who had come to stake their claim at the Comstock Lode. In its heyday during the 1860s and 1870s, 24-hour silver and gold mining works dotted the mountain. Enjoy time at leisure for lunch and browsing in the historic downtown. Walking down the 1870s boardwalk is like walking through time. We’ll then board the Virginia & Truckee Railroad, by far the most famous of all American short line railroads. On this excursion back into the Old West, we’ll savor the spectacular mountain scenery while the train travels past the famous Comstock Bonanza mine ruins. We return to the hotel with the balance of the evening at leisure to enjoy the amenities of the resort.
Day 6
Tuesday, 10/26/2021 - Lake Tahoe, Mammoth Lakes
After an included breakfast,  we’ll travel by motorcoach to Lake Tahoe. Located at 6,200 feet above sea level, Lake Tahoe is the largest alpine lake in North America. At Zephyr Cove, we’ll board the M.S. Dixie II paddlewheeler for a memorable lunch cruise. Sit back, relax and take in the dazzling vistas of the surrounding mountains on this two-hour narrated cruise that offers non-stop photo opportunities. In Emerald Bay we’ll gaze upon Fannente Island (nicknamed “little rock island”) and Vikingsholm Castle, the stone mansion on its shores. We continue south this afternoon on Highway 395 paralleling the scenic Sierra Nevada. This time of year offers the best opportunity to see the magnificent fall foliage in the High Sierra. This evening we’ll arrive in Mammoth Lakes for an overnight stay at an all-suites hotel in the heart of Mammoth Village.
Day 7
Wednesday, 10/27/2021 - Eastern Sierra, Journey Home
Enjoy an included breakfast before we continue south through the Eastern Sierra beneath the towering Sierra Nevada range. We’ll pass such quaint and old west towns as Big Pine, Independence and Lone Pine in the shadow of Mount Whitney. We’ll stop at the Manzanar National Historic Site visitor’s center to learn about this historic site. It was here, in 1942, that the United States government ordered more than 110,000 Japanese men, women and children to leave their homes to be detained in this remote, military-style camp. We continue south this afternoon to Southern California, returning to our drop-off points this evening. We’ll take with us the sounds of the rails and the memories of the beautiful sights and experiences while on this exciting journey!
