Day By Day Itinerary:
Day 1
Monday, 5/10/2021 - Arrive in Flagstaff
We set out from our departure points this morning for the high-country mountains of Northern Arizona. After several rest stops and a stop for lunch on own, we’ll arrive in Flagstaff, Arizona this evening. At 7,000 feet elevation, Flagstaff has a spectacular setting in the shadow of the San Francisco Peaks and amongst the largest contiguous ponderosa pine forest in the world! Our full-service, recently renovated, AAA Four Diamond hotel for the next five nights is situated on 500 pine-covered acres and features luxurious large guest rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows and imported marble.
Day 2
Tuesday, 5/11/2021 - Grand Canyon by Rail
After an included breakfast, we’ll travel west to Williams, Arizona – a Route 66 town steeped in nostalgia. Visit the Grand Canyon Railway Hotel, designed to resemble the century-old train depot that housed the original Fray Marcos Hotel. Here, we’ll board the historic Grand Canyon Railway, featuring authentically-restored Pullman Coaches. The opulence of oversized reclining seats along with extra-large windows and refreshments served onboard will make for a memorable experience. Sit back and relax in the air-conditioned, first-class car and gaze out the window in search of prairie dogs, deer and antelope grazing the wooded flatlands. As we travel by train through the beautiful northern Arizona countryside towards Grand Canyon National Park, the terrain will dramatically shift from high desert to prairie and then from prairie to pine. Upon arrival at Grand Canyon’s authentic 1910 depot, you’ll find yourself gazing at the most awesome landscape that no postcard could ever do justice. Eons of time are represented in the many colors of earth uncovered by millions of years of erosion by the Colorado River. At 277 miles long, 18 miles wide and one mile deep, it’s easy to see why the Grand Canyon is one of the seven wonders of the natural world. Enjoy time at leisure to marvel at the Grand Canyon’s amazing gorges, buttes and colors, enjoy lunch on your own and explore the Grand Canyon Village. There are a variety of restaurants and attractions in the Village including Verkamp's Visitor Center, the Yavapai Geology Museum, Kolb Studio and the iconic El Tovar Hotel. We return to the Grand Canyon Railway Hotel by train and reboard our motorcoach to return to Flagstaff with the balance of the evening at leisure.
Day 3
Wednesday, 5/12/2021 - Flagstaff
After an included breakfast, a local guide will join us onboard the motorcoach as we explore several sites where the Apollo astronauts trained before they went to the moon 50 years ago! Enjoy a docent-guided tour of the Lowell Observatory, the National Historic Landmark that was founded in 1894. Not only was Pluto discovered here in 1930, but the Apollo astronauts studied the moon through the telescopes here. This afternoon we’ll visit Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument. Born in a dramatic series of eruptions only 900 years ago, Sunset Crater is where the astronauts tested space suits, rovers and instruments. Learn about the powerful geologic forces and see their aftermath for yourself on a short walk along the Lava Flow Trail. We continue to Wupatki National Monument. Here, the rock walls of 800-year-old pueblos dot a desert landscape once home to thousands of people. This evening we’ll enjoy an included dinner at a locals’ favorite in Flagstaff.
Day 4
Thursday, 5/13/2021 - Meteor Crater, Petrified Forest National Park
Following an included breakfast, we’ll travel east to Meteor Crater – the world’s best-preserved meteorite impact site. Measuring 1 mile across and 550 feet deep, this creator was created 50,000 years ago by a meteorite the size of a large house striking Earth at 28,000 miles per hour! We continue east to Winslow, Arizona – made famous by the Eagles when they sung about ‘standing on the corner’ here in their song “Take it Easy.” After we “stand on the corner” at Standin’ on the Corner Park, we’ll continue to La Posada Hotel. This legendary hotel first opened in 1930 as one of the jewels in the glittering string of railways hotels and restaurants along the Santa Fe Railroad, built and operated by one Fred Harvey. We’ll enjoy an included lunch in the hotel’s Turquoise Room, known as the finest restaurant in the Four Corners region. Continuing east, we’ll enter Arizona’s Painted Desert – a broad region of rocky badlands encompassing more than 93,500 acres. The vast landscape here features rocks in every hue – from deep lavenders and rich grays to reds, oranges and even pinks. We’ll visit Petrified Forest National Park and see one of the largest and most colorful concentrations of petrified wood in the world. A driving tour with a short nature walk and a stop at the visitor’s center will showcase this national park that is home to historic structures, archeological sites, and displays of 225 million-year-old fossils. We return to our Flagstaff hotel this evening.
Day 5
Friday, 5/14/2021 - Sedona
After an included breakfast, we’ll travel south through Oak Creek Canyon – a magnificent steep-walled canyon considered to be one of the most scenic drives in the country. Later this morning we’ll arrive in Sedona, regularly described as one of America’s most beautiful places. Nestled amid striking red sandstone formations, Sedona’s truly spectacular landscape has long attracted spiritual seekers, artists and healers. Enjoy time at leisure at the Tlaquepaque Arts & Crafts Village, a village filled with 40 specialty shops and art galleries. This afternoon enjoy time at leisure in Sedona’s Uptown, home to numerous galleries and boutiques, restaurants, historic buildings, and outdoor sculptures. Or, take an optional Red Rocks Jeep expedition, available for an additional $135 per person – on this two-hour, backcountry tour aboard a state-of-the-art Jeep Wrangler, a knowledgeable driver-guide will take you off-road into Sedona’s famous red-rock landscape which offers adventure at every turn. Enjoy an included dinner at a locals’ favorite before returning to our hotel.
Day 6
Saturday, 5/15/2021 - Journey Home
