Day 2
Thursday, 9/2/2021 - Black Hills of South Dakota
After an included breakfast, we’ll travel to Wind Cave National Park. Here, bison, elk, and other wildlife roam the rolling prairie grasslands and forested hillsides of one of America's oldest national parks. Below the remnant island of intact prairie sits Wind Cave, one of the longest and most complex caves in the world. Many of the cave’s walls are rich in honeycomb-shaped calcite formations known as boxwork – rarely found anywhere else in the world. We’ll stop at the visitor center and if the cave is open and available for pre-arranged tours, we’ll join a park ranger for a guided walking tour (300 stairs over a 2/3 mile route) to see the beautiful cave formations including boxwork, cave popcorn, and flowstone. This afternoon we’ll continue into the famed Black Hills of South Dakota to visit Mount Rushmore National Memorial. Enjoy time at leisure here to set your eyes upon the majestic faces of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln carved into solid granite. Take a stroll along the Presidential Trail for more intimate views of the 60-foot faces. The visitor center and museum houses photos and artifacts related to the memorial. The “Avenue of Flags” features flags of all fifty states and U.S. territories and leads to the Grandview Terrace – the Memorial’s main viewing area. We continue to Custer State Park and the Historic State Game Lodge – the summer “White House” for Calvin Coolidge. Here, we’ll board a Jeep for a guided buffalo “safari.” Get an up-close view of some of the park’s 1,400 free-roaming buffalo, as well as possible sightings of elk, wild burros and golden eagles. With 73,000 acres of granite spires, ponderosa pines, and alpine lakes, Custer State Park is one of the jewels in South Dakota’s crown. This evening we’ll enter one of the Park’s mountain meadow canyons for a chuck wagon feast and live entertainment with a western flair. We return to Rapid City this evening.

Day 3
Friday, 9/3/2021 - Badlands National Park, Medora
Following an included breakfast, we’ll travel to Badlands National Park – a study in contrast of nature’s chaos and wild beauty. This landscape resembles the planet Mars with ragged ridges, ravaged gullies, spires, and knobs formed over the ages by wind and water erosion. We’ll make several photo stops and stop at the visitor center. We continue to Wall, South Dakota and visit the Wall Drug Store – famous for their “Free Ice Water.” Enjoy time at leisure for lunch on your own and browsing in this fascinating complex of shops, art galleries, and restaurants. This afternoon we begin our journey north to Medora, the historic city located on the western edge of North Dakota. We’ll enjoy a two-night stay at the Rough Riders Hotel, located in the heart of downtown Medora. Named for the volunteer cavalry unit led by our 26th President, this luxury hotel is where western charm meets presidential history.

Day 4
Saturday, 9/4/2021 - Medora, Theodore Roosevelt National Park
Following an included breakfast, we’ll travel the short distance to Theodore Roosevelt National Park. We’ll stop at the visitor center and see the adjacent Maltese Cross Cabin – Roosevelt's first ranch cabin. When Theodore Roosevelt came to Dakota Territory to hunt bison in 1883, he was a skinny, young, spectacled young man from New York. He could not have imagined how his adventure in this remote and unfamiliar place would forever alter the course of the nation. The rugged landscape and strenuous life that Theodore Roosevelt experienced here would help shape a conservation policy that we still benefit from today. We’ll be joined by a local guide for a driving tour along the Park’s Scenic Loop Drive to see the “Northern Badlands” at the only National Park in North Dakota. This afternoon we’ll take our seats in the Old Town Hall Theater for a presentation of The Teddy Roosevelt Show. Theodore Roosevelt comes to life in this vivid and rousing presentation featuring Theodore Roosevelt the president, husband, father, soldier, hunter and Badlands rancher. This evening our memorable dinner is at the nationally-acclaimed pitchfork steak fondue. Here, steaks are skewered on a pitchfork and plunged into hot oil which delivers an unbelievably juicy steak, with a light crispiness to the outside. It's the best of cowboy cookin' with an unbeatable view of the Badlands and sweet cowboy serenades. Following, we’ll attend the Medora Musical set in the outdoor splendor of the rugged North Dakota Badlands. This professionally produced, high energy, western-style musical show is proudly dedicated to the legacy of Theodore Roosevelt, and the time he spent here in the Badlands of the Dakota Territory.

Day 5
Sunday, 9/5/2021 - Medora to Bismarck
Following an included breakfast, we’ll visit Chateau de Mores, the 26-room, two-story chateau built in 1883 which memorializes the life and activities of Antoine de Vallombrosa, the Marquis de Mores. Among the Marquis’s enterprises were a beef packing plant, a stagecoach line, a freighting company, refrigerated railway cars, and a new town which he called Medora, in honor of his wife. The Chateau was the summer residence of the Marquis's family and is now a historic house museum that contains many of the original furnishings and personal effects of the de Mores family. We’ll then travel east to Bismarck, North Dakota and begin a two-night stay in North Dakota’s capital city.
Breakfast
Day 6
Monday, 9/6/2021 - Bismarck
Following an included breakfast, we’ll travel just cross the Missouri River to Mandan and visit Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park, once an important infantry and cavalry post. It was from this fort that Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer and the 7th Cavalry rode out on their ill-fated expedition against the Sioux at the Little Big Horn. After a guided tour of the Victorian-style Custer House – home of General George and Libbie Custer, we’ll enjoy a picnic lunch and tour the On-A-Slant Indian Village. Here reconstructed earth lodges depict the lifestyle of the Mandan Indians, who occupied this site from about 1575-1781. This afternoon we’ll see the iconic North Dakota Capitol. This 19-story Art Deco capitol dominates the cityscape as the tallest building in the entire state and is perhaps our nation’s most unique capitol building. We continue to the North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum, an interactive museum that features four museum galleries that trace North Dakota’s rich history from its earliest geologic formation 600 million years ago to today. Enjoy an included farewell dinner with your fellow travelers this evening and share stories from the road.

Tuesday, 9/7/2021 - Lewis & Clark, Journey Home
After an included breakfast, we’ll follow in the footsteps that helped shape American history and blazed trails that opened the gateway to the West as we travel north to Washburn on the shores of the Missouri River. We’ll become immersed in the journey of the Lewis & Clark expedition at the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center featuring state-of-the-art, interactive exhibits and an impressive collection of artifacts. We continue to the reconstructed Fort Mandan, the Corps of Discovery's wintering post from 1804-1805. Here we’ll enjoy an included lunch and an interpretive program highlighting the fully-furnished quarters that bring to life what it was like for the brave men in the Corps of Discovery during that North Dakota winter over 200 years ago. This afternoon we’ll make our way to the Bismarck Airport for our return flight to Los Angeles. Those guests not taking advantage of the optional group airfare, should plan to depart the Bismarck Airport no earlier than 3:30 p.m. Back in Los Angeles, those with pre-arranged transfers will be returned to their respective drop-offs.
