Day By Day Itinerary:
Day 1
Wednesday, 12/15/2021 - Coastal Train Ride, Cambria Christmas Market
We set out from our departure points this morning for the tranquility of California’s Central Coast. We’ll travel by deluxe motorcoach to downtown Los Angeles’ Union Station to board Amtrak’s Coast Starlight for a memorable five-hour rail journey along California’s spectacular coastline and through its fertile valleys to San Luis Obispo. We’ll travel along Point Conception and through Vandenberg Air Force Base where you’ll see the launch complexes and beautiful undeveloped coastline only visible by train. You are free to move around the train, get lunch from the snack bar or enjoy a waiter-served lunch on your own in the dining car (based on availability). Check out the view from the observation car or just relax in your reclining seat. Upon arrival in San Luis Obispo, we’ll reboard our motorcoach and continue along the coast to the quaint seaside village of Cambria – the artists’ colony nestled in a forest of towering Monterey Pines along a craggy stretch of the California Central Coast. We’ll enjoy a two night stay at the charming Cambria Pines Lodge, the woodsy-chic lodge nestled amongst 25 acres of stunning gardens and a Monterey pine forest. This boutique hotel features spacious rooms that are richly appointed with farmhouse furnishings and modern amenities. The sprawling grounds feature beautiful gardens, a sparkling heated outdoor pool and hot tub, and the Cambria Pines Lodge Restaurant offering a diverse menu of enticing dishes. The Fireside Lounge features a crackling fire, great happy hour specials and live music nightly. And this time of year, the lodge is decked out in its holiday finest – sure to get you in the spirit for the season! Enjoy the evening at leisure with dinner on your own at the restaurant or at the Cambria Christmas Market, the charming outdoor festival. This annual holiday event draws visitors from all over to the Cambria Pines Lodge to experience a traditional holiday market similar to what one would find in many towns in Germany and Austria where it is known as “Weihnachtsmarkt.” The vendor market of open-air stalls features local merchants selling seasonal gifts along with brats, fresh baked goods and treats along with seasonal drinks like Glühwein – the traditional German hot spiced wine that is sure to keep you cozy while exploring a winter wonderland full of twinkling lights, music and merriment. The walk-thru light display that has to be seen to be believed, features more than two million lights, displays and Santa’s workshop.
Day 2
Thursday, 12/16/2021 - Cambria, Field of Light at Sensorio
Following an included breakfast, we’ll enjoy a scenic ride along the coast north of Cambria to the elephant seal rookery at Piedras Blancas. This location is one of only a few spots in the world where northern elephant seals can be seen in vast numbers. We’ll continue to William Randolph Hearst State Beach to take a walk along the pier in this protected cove. After exploring Old San Simeon Village, we’ll return south and enjoy time at leisure browsing the charming shops, boutiques and galleries in Cambria’s quaint and historic East and West Village. This seaside village nestled in a forest of towering Monterey Pines is also a renowned artists’ colony. The galleries offer an eclectic selection of everything from art glass to watercolor painting, nature photography to abstracts created by both well-known and local artists. This evening we’ll enjoy an included dinner with choice of entrée at Linn’s. This Cambria icon is a locals’ favorite that serves up contemporary comfort food classics and is famous for their olallieberry pie. We’ll top off a memorable day at Field of Light at Sensorio. Internationally-acclaimed artist Bruce Munro and his team spent five weeks assembling his largest artwork to date in a valley between rolling hills just east of downtown Paso Robles. This enormous, multi-acre walk-through installation is comprised of nearly 60,000 spherical “flowers” that are lit by fiber-optics gently illuminating the landscape in subtle blooms of morphing color. As you stroll along the flat, lit trail at your own pace, you’ll be amazed by this stunning display of “solar flowers” that create a living kaleidoscope of color. And just unveiled and now on display, is the new Light Towers installation, a stunning new exhibit that celebrates Paso Robles’ wine heritage. These colorful 6-foot-tall towers composed of more than 17,000 wine bottles, are illuminated with glowing optic fibers whose colors morph to a moving musical score.
Day 3
Friday, 12/17/2021 - Solvang & Journey Home
Following an included breakfast at the Lodge, we’ll continue south and travel the back roads in the Santa Ynez Valley enroute to the quaint Danish town of Solvang, known as America’s famous “Little Denmark.” This time of year, the quaint old-world architectural styles and flower-lined streets are beautifully decorated for the holidays. Enjoy time at leisure for browsing the wonderful shops that offer imported European wares and collectibles and lunch on your own in the delicious restaurants. For a true taste of Danish culture, sample the delicious pastries offered by Solvang’s authentic local bakeries.
