Day By Day Itinerary:
Day 1
Thursday, 12/16/2021 - Coastal Train Ride
We set out from our departure points this morning for the tranquility of California’s Central Coast. We’ll travel by deluxe motorcoach to downtown Los Angeles’ Union Station to board Amtrak’s Coast Starlight for a memorable five-hour rail journey along California’s spectacular coastline and through its fertile valleys to San Luis Obispo. We’ll travel along Point Conception and through Vandenberg Air Force Base where you’ll see the launch complexes and beautiful undeveloped coastline only visible by train. You are free to move around the train, get lunch from the snack bar or enjoy a waiter-served lunch on your own in the dining car (based on availability). Check out the view from the observation car or just relax in your reclining seat. Upon arrival in San Luis Obispo, our motorcoach will be waiting to take us the short distance to the charming Apple Farm Inn  – our accommodations for the next two nights. Nestled by San Luis Obispo Creek and surrounded by rolling hills, the Apple Farm Inn is a “country rustic,” AAA Four Diamond, Victorian-style inn situated among a lush, quiet garden setting. The inn blends the country charm of yesteryear with all of the modern comforts of today including a seating nook and fireplace in every comfy cozy room and a heated pool year round. The gift shop is full of wonderful treasures including home decorations, trinkets, and novelty items. The bakery features fresh baked cookies, eclairs, lemon bars, pies and their famous hot apple dumplings that are ooey gooey, delicious, and have just the right amount of sweetness. And this time of year, the whole property is decked out in its holiday finest with a myriad of trees, lights, gifts, and decorations to get you in the mood for the season! Enjoy the inn’s complimentary wine reception prior to dinner on your own at the Apple Farm Inn Restaurant – the warm and inviting farmhouse-inspired restaurant that exudes country charm and rustic elegance thanks to vintage Americana decorations.
Day 2
Friday, 12/17/2021 - Central Coast Sightseeing
Enjoy an included breakfast this morning at the Apple Farm Inn before we travel to Avila Beach and enjoy the breathtaking ocean views as we travel along Lighthouse Road to Point San Luis Lighthouse, known as the “Jewel of the Central Coast.” The historic Light Station Park, built in 1890, enjoys dramatic vistas stretching from Avila to Vandenberg. Learn what life was like for the Lighthouse Keeper and his family and experience a rich history as we tour the grounds, the beautifully restored Lighthouse, the Hornhouse, and see the lustrous original Fresnel lens. Then, take your seat for an included lunch inside this restored historic landmark. After time to relax at the Apple Farm Inn, late this afternoon we’ll travel up the coast to Cambria to enjoy an included dinner with choice of entrée at Linn’s. This Cambria icon is a locals’ favorite that serves up contemporary comfort food classics and is famous for their olallieberry pie. We continue to Hearst Castle, the National Historical Landmark and extraordinary temple to opulence and excess featuring a 165-room castle, terraced gardens and pools that sits above the clouds on top of “The Enchanted Hill.” Discover why the holiday season was an exceptionally festive time for William Randolph Hearst and his guests while on a docent-guided, seasonal evening tour of the estate. Your knowledgeable guide will share stories of holiday festivities during the estate’s heyday while touring the swimming pools, the Casa del Sol-guest house and the grand social rooms of Casa Grande – beautifully decorated for the holidays and featuring Mr. Hearst’s celebrated art collection. This 75-minute walking tour consists of 190 stairs (both up and down) along a 2/3-mile route.

Day 3
Saturday, 12/18/2021 - La Purisima Mission & Solvang
After an included breakfast this morning at the Apple Farm Inn, we head south to La Purisima Mission State Park, providing an opportunity to explore California’s early heritage. Founded in 1787 as the 11th of 21 Franciscan Missions, the La Purisima Mission land holdings once covered nearly 470 square miles. This Mission is considered the most completely restored mission in California, with ten of the original buildings fully restored and furnished, including the church, shops, living quarters, and blacksmith shop. Get a glimpse at what life was like here in the 1820s, when the residents engaged in weaving, pottery making, candle making, blacksmithing, livestock production, and leather work. We continue to Solvang, America’s famous “Little Denmark.” This time of year, the quaint old-world architectural styles and flower-lined streets are beautifully decorated for the holidays. Enjoy time at leisure for lunch and browsing in this very walkable village that features wonderful shops offering imported European wares and collectibles, delicious bakeries and a variety of restaurants. We continue south arriving at our drop-off points this evening with memories of our time relaxing on the Coast Starlight train and at the Apple Farm Inn during our Central Coast holiday getaway.
