This time of year the Plaza is filled with flickering lights and traditional farolitos – luminous bags of candles that are lit by hand each night. While sightseeing in Santa Fe, Taos, Albuquerque and Chimayo with local guides, we’ll travel the colorful trails of the Southwest to explore ancient cultures, diverse landscapes, renowned museums and experience world-famous Southwestern cuisine to discover first-hand why it’s called the “Land of Enchantment.”

Day By Day Itinerary:
Day 1
Tuesday, 11/27/2018 - Travel to Santa Fe
Optional transfers from home or our departure points this morning will have us at Los Angeles International Airport for our scheduled non-stop flight arriving in Albuquerque, New Mexico this afternoon. Those passengers not taking advantage of the optional group air, should arrive at the Albuquerque Airport by 11:00 a.m. Upon arrival, a deluxe motorcoach will be waiting to transport us to historic Old Town Albuquerque with time at leisure for lunch and browsing on your own. Since it was founded in 1706 by Spanish Settlers, the Old Town area has remained the center for Southwest culture, architecture, shopping, art and cuisine. After visiting the beautiful and peaceful San Felipe de Neri Church, we’ll begin our journey north to Santa Fe – nestled at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. We’ll enjoy four nights at an upscale hotel located within walking distance of the Santa Fe Plaza area, the historic heart of the city. This time of year, the historic Plaza is illuminated by farolitos – luminous little bags of candles and sand that are lit by hand each night – along with silvery lights strung on the trees. Enjoy an included dinner this evening at a locals’ favorite.

Wednesday, 11/28/2018 - Santa Fe
Following an included breakfast at the hotel, we’ll be joined by a local guide for a comprehensive guided tour of Santa Fe. Founded in 1610, Santa Fe is the oldest seat of government in the United States and this capital city reflects its Spanish, Pueblo, and Mexican history. We’ll begin with a walking tour of the historic Santa Fe Plaza to see the Palace of the Governors and the tree-lined streets with buildings of distinctive design, adobe houses and eclectic shops. We’ll go inside the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi and visit the famed Loretto Chapel to see its miraculous spiral staircase – a true marvel of architectural ingenuity. See the New Mexico Capitol building and go inside the San Miguel Chapel – the oldest church in the United States. Enjoy time to browse the Shop-A Christmas Store, one of the country’s oldest year-round Christmas stores. Specializing in handcrafted Christmas ornaments, Nativities and Santas by New Mexico Artists, most of the items found here can’t be found anywhere else. Enjoy the afternoon at leisure to take in this spectacular city and its vibrant Plaza area featuring a variety of shops and museums including the New Mexico Museum of Art, the New Mexico History Museum and the Georgia O’Keefe Museum, holding the largest collection of O’Keeffe’s work in the world – over 3,000 of the artist’s works including 140 of her oil paintings and almost 700 drawings.

Thursday, 11/29/2018 - Taos
After an included breakfast, we’ll depart Santa Fe with a local guide onboard and travel the “Low Road” to the adobe town of Taos seated on a high desert mesa within the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. We’ll tour Taos Pueblo, one of the most picturesque of the Southwest adobes. Designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, this Pueblo dates back to the 14th century and is one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in North America. Learn about the traditional lifestyle and beliefs of the Pueblo Indians and see the striking adobe chapel of San Geronimo. Enjoy time at leisure for lunch and browsing in the charming Taos Plaza before we continue this afternoon via the Camino Alto, or “High Road,” following the same route taken by the Spanish colonists through the scenic grandeur of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and past villages that date from the Spanish Colonial era. We’ll stop in the village of Chimayo, known for its beautiful tapestry weaving. We’ll visit El Santuario de Chimayo, the famous chapel believed to possess healing powers in its soil. Then, enjoy an included dinner this evening at Rancho de Chimayo, a local landmark known for its traditional northern New Mexico cuisine.

Day 4
Friday, 11/30/2018 - Bandelier, Los Alamos
Following an included breakfast, we’ll travel the Jemez Mountain Trail National Scenic Byway, a mountain road that twists through time and terrain, contrasting vermilion desert cliffs and coniferous forests...from 13th century cliff dwellings to the birth of the Atomic Age in nearly the same breath. Enjoy a guided walk of Bandelier National Monument. Nestled within a beautiful canyon and mesa country, this Monument provides a peak into the lives of the ancient Anasazi Pueblo culture that existed here 11,000 years ago. Petroglyphs and dwellings carved into the soft rock cliffs pay tribute to the early days of a culture that still survives in the surrounding communities. We continue to Los Alamos, a unique town which was established over 70 years ago as a secret city during World War II. We’ll enjoy an included lunch at a locals’ favorite followed by time at leisure to explore the Bradbury Science Museum. This museum provides a window into the history of the institution, its national security mission, and the broad range of exciting science and technology research that is done here to improve our nation’s future. We return to Santa Fe late this afternoon with the balance of the evening at leisure.

Saturday, 12/1/2018 - Albuquerque, Farewell
After an included breakfast we’ll travel south to Albuquerque via the famed Turquoise Trail National Scenic Byway passing old ghost towns and beautiful scenery. We’ll then step aboard the  United States’ longest aerial tram – the Sandia Peak Tramway – for a 2.7-mile journey above the Sandia Mountains. As you soar from the desert floor over the Rio Grande Valley, you’ll enjoy stunning panoramic views! At the summit of Sandia Crest (elevation 10,378), enjoy time at leisure to explore and take in the spectacular views. Later, we’ll visit the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center which tells the story of New Mexico’s Pueblo Indian culture through authentic native arts, craft, and dance. Enjoy time at leisure with lunch on your own at the award-winning restaurant here. This afternoon we arrive at the Albuquerque Airport for our scheduled non-stop return flight to Los Angeles. Those passengers not taking advantage of the optional group air, should depart ABQ no earlier than 5:30 p.m. Those with pre-arranged transfers will be returned to their respective destinations. Delightful memories of our time in the “Land of Enchantment” will remain with us forever.
