On the centennial of his birth, the Skirball Museum presents Leonard Bernstein at 100 – a celebration of the life and work of the great American composer and conductor who dedicated his life to making classical music a vibrant part of American culture. Organized by the Grammy Museum, this is the official exhibition of the Bernstein centennial celebrations, which will include events at venues around the U.S. Encompassing half a century of work by the “Renaissance man of American music,” this is the most comprehensive retrospective of Bernstein’s life and career ever staged in a museum setting. Blending his Jewish roots with the Western classical canon, jazz, and popular music, Bernstein crossed genre lines and wrote landmark scores for musical theater (West Side Story, Candide) and film (On the Waterfront), and produced a large body of symphonic and choral works as well.

Enjoy a docent-guided tour to explore the many facets of Bernstein’s life at this exhibition that boasts over 150 objects including photographs, personal items, papers, scores, correspondence, costumes, furniture, and audio and video recordings. Featured objects on display will include Bernstein’s conductor baton, his first childhood piano, the desk used to compose West Side Story, handwritten score sheets for songs from West Side Story, including “America,” “Tonight,” and “Maria,” and Bernstein’s handwritten Harvard study notebook from 1939.

Also on view at the Skirball will be The Jim Henson Exhibition, featuring more than 100 objects and twenty-five historic puppets – including Kermit the Frog. Discover Henson’s groundbreaking approach to puppetry and the transformative impact he had on contemporary culture including The Muppet Show, the Muppet movies, Sesame Street and Fraggle Rock.

Next, enjoy time at leisure for browsing and an early dinner on your own at Marina Del Rey’s Fisherman’s Village, featuring a variety of waterfront restaurants and shops. Then, we set sail aboard the Hornblower yacht for a relaxing two-hour sunset cruise through the scenic waterways of Marina del Rey. Sit back, relax and enjoy the views of luxurious waterfront homes, exclusive yachts, amazing coastline vistas and marine life as the sky transforms into a breathtaking display of color as the sun dips into the horizon. Onboard, enjoy included light hors d'oeuvres with a cash bar available.
