Today we are joined by professional step-on guide, Curt, who is a history buff with an expertise on the evolution of Los Angeles, and is especially loved for his charismatic personality and fun stories. Southern California’s beach cities are world renowned – perhaps none more than Marina Del Rey, Venice, Santa Monica and Malibu. These eclectic, energetic and historic cities along 30 miles of sun drenched beaches are the epitome of the Southern California lifestyle. We’ll visit the Venice Canal Historic District, noteworthy for its man-made canals that were built in 1905 to recreate the appearance and feel of Venice, Italy. Take a stroll along the world famous “Ocean Front Walk,” Southern California’s number one visitor attraction. Stretching along the manicured sands of the Pacific Ocean, this boardwalk is home to the most vibrant carnival of people and activity imaginable! Here you can see everything from break-dancing to broken glass walking, mimes to musicians, jugglers to jesters and everything in between. In Santa Monica we’ll visit the iconic Santa Monica Pier, the last of the famous pleasure piers that once lined the Southern California coast. Built in 1909 and known as “Southern California's Coney Island,” this icon has been featured prominently in numerous movies – perhaps none more famous than The Sting. We’ll visit the 1922 Looff Hippodrome Carousel where Paul Newman worked in the movie and take a ride on one of the 44 hand-carved vintage animals that rise and fall and whirl around to the sound of the organ. Enjoy time at leisure for lunch on your own in downtown Santa Monica at Santa Monica Place or Third Street Promenade. We continue to the Self-Realization Fellowship Shrine, an internationally-renowned meditation garden offering people from around the world a unique and inspirational oasis. Enjoy time at leisure to stroll the gardens which feature an amazing diversity of colorful plants and trees, meditation nooks, koi ponds, swans, and spectacular ocean vistas. The Court of Religions honors the five principal religions of the world, and the Mahatma Gandhi World Peace Memorial is where a portion of Gandhi's ashes are enshrined. We’ll “cruise” along the famed Pacific Coast Highway past Pepperdine University, Marion Davies beach guesthouse, the Getty Villa and numerous other sights to the Santa Monica Mountains above Malibu. Here we’ll visit the Malibu Hindu Temple, one of the largest Hindu temples in the Western hemisphere and believed to be one of the better examples of Hindu architecture anywhere outside of the Asian subcontinent. Walking barefoot on the cool and immaculately clean marble floor of the temple complex (visitors must remove their shoes at the entrance, though socks are optional), the smell of incense wafts sweetly through the air, instilling visitors with the temple’s calming, soothing aura. A common sight on the temple grounds are the polite and gregarious priests – all of whom come from India – and live full-time at the temple complex. Suggested: walking shoes and there is considerable walking and stairs on this tour. All visits subject to change.
