On this new tour, we’ll visit sites that had significant importance in the life of Walt Disney, a beloved man among children and adults alike, who will be most remembered for creating Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and, of course, Disneyland! During his lifetime he became an entertainment magnate and film pioneer and has been honored with 32 Oscars – more than any other person – for his extraordinary achievements in film. We begin with a visit to the Stanley Ranch Museum, home to some of the oldest homes and businesses in Orange County. Amongst several fascinating buildings, dating back to the late 1800s and early 1900s, is the Walt Disney Studio Garage. It was relocated here from its original site in North Hollywood after it was saved from demolition in 1984 by The Friends of Walt Disney who generously donated, dismantled and reassembled the historic building at the Stanley Ranch Museum. The garage was once used by Walt as a studio when he came to California in 1923, and it was in this garage where he worked on his animation machine to produce cartoons, as well as drew his characters. There's a precious photo of Walt and an assortment of Disney memorabilia inside. We’ll next venture to Griffith Park to visit Walt Disney’s Carolwood Barn, a living showcase of Walt’s passion for railroading that is only open one day per month! In 1950, Walt built the Carolwood Pacific Railroad in the backyard of his house in Holmby Hills. He named the railroad for the street where he lived: Carolwood Drive. The 2,615 feet of track included a 46 foot long trestle and a 90 foot long tunnel under his wife's flower bed. Amidst the railroad, he had a barn built where he could monitor and remotely control the switches on the track. The barn also served as a workshop and a place for Walt and his friends to relax. Before the Holmby Hills home was sold, Walt's daughter had the barn dismantled and donated it to Griffith Park to be shared with everyone who loved him. The Barn is located inside the 1/8th scale track, the same scale that Walt had at his home, and is filled with trains of all scales. Many of Walt's personal items and tools are displayed including work benches he built himself. Also see the depot from animator Ollie Johnston's miniature railroad and their newest addition: an original "combine" coach from the Santa Fe & Disneyland Railroad! Another highlight of this Griffith Park barn is the carousel that his children would ride in their youth, later inspiring him to create the much larger Disneyland carousel you can still visit in the park today! Located just a few miles away from the Disney Studios in Burbank, the historic Tam O’Shanter Inn is was where Walt Disney ate so often that is was commonly referred to as the “studio commissary.” Enjoy an included late lunch with choice of entrée and dessert at this charming replica of a cozy Scottish Inn owned by the Lawry’s family. A journey through Disney’s life wouldn’t be complete without a visit to his final resting place, at the beautiful Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale. Marvel at fun “Disney” stories and anecdotes during this nostalgic and celebrity-themed adventure.
