Today we are joined by professional step-on guide, Curt, a history buff with an expertise on the evolution of Los Angeles, who is especially loved for his charismatic personality and fun stories. Curt leads us in search of the best tacos in L.A. – from the fried-to-perfection crispy tacos to the traditional regional style and even secret family recipes that exemplify the L.A. taco scene. Our taco tasting adventure begins at a taqueria in downtown L.A. with a freshly made corn tortilla stuffed with home-style stewed beef and an “Armando Palmero” (a Mexican-style “Arnold Palmer”) to drink. We continue to East Los Angeles, which has long been the center of taco activity in the United States! Here, endless variations and regional styles have worked their way up from the streets into stand-alone taqueros and restaurants. Taco-crazed Angelinos and other taco lovers have been coming here for decades, not only for the tacos but for the neighborhood that is one-of-a-kind – full of colorful murals, unique history and incredible energy. Enjoy a shrimp taco and a fish taco from two different “mom and pop” taco shops while we learn about the history of the neighborhood and the context of each taco we taste. Learn how to find a quality taco stand, the history of these authentic dishes, their ingredients, as well as the backstory of the owners which involves complex histories and identities of Mexicans, Californians and Mexican-Americans. Enjoy a taco from a restaurant that began its operation in 1974 from a converted ice cream truck, and then a visit to the Plaza de la Raza Cultural Center for the Arts and Education situated in the heart of Lincoln Park. This is one of only a few Los Angeles landmarks where artists, locals and visitors convene to celebrate the rich contribution of Latino performing and visual arts. Our adventure continues at La Plaza de Cultura y Artes, the nation’s premier museum of Mexican American culture, featuring interactive exhibits exploring the ongoing story of Mexican-Americans in Los Angeles and beyond.
