Today we are joined by professional step-on guide, Curt, who is a history buff with an expertise on the evolution of Los Angeles, and is especially loved for his charismatic personality and fun stories. Curt will lead the way today as we explore a number of “hidden” gardens in and around Los Angeles. We begin at Arlington Garden, Pasadena’s only dedicated public garden. Find out why the garden is owned by Caltrans and enjoy time to admire its Italian-style olive allée, numerous succulent and cactus gardens, an Arroyo Seco-like pathway flanked by sycamores, an orange grove, and other surprises around every corner.

We continue to the Los Angeles Police Academy to explore the charming, rocky garden where the babbling of the waterfall may be interrupted by the sound of a little gunfire! Enjoy an included lunch at the kitschy 1950s diner-style Police Academy Café, recently re-opened after a major renovation. Dine with real cops, trainees and detectives while admiring the police memorabilia that decorates the walls.

At the Cathedral Our Lady of the Angels we’ll visit the hidden Olive Garden that was conceived as a play area and is now lovingly known as the “Children's Garden.” The garden is adorned with frolicking animals based on biblical scriptures, and each was individually designed by a children's book artist. With a visit to the "Blue Ribbon Gardens” at the Walt Disney Concert Hall, admire the romanticism of this hidden rooftop gem that is in stark contrast to the vaulting steel of the concert hall. The Frank Gehry-designed fountain pays tribute to the late Lillian Disney and her love for Delft porcelain and roses. We continue to a well-kept secret garden on Bunker Hill that features over 200 trees and three waterfalls creating a sharp contrast between the steel and glass office towers and the natural sky, trees, grass and urban sculpture. At the James Irvine Japanese Garden, we’ll explore this intimate and unexpected paradise that was designed in the Zen tradition of the famous gardens of Kyoto; known as the “Garden of the Clear Stream,” it features a 170-foot cascading stream, a wide variety of plants, flowers and trees, and handcrafted cedar bridges. Suggested: walking shoes as there are uneven walkways in the gardens.
Depart: LHS 7:30 a.m., FV 8:00, VS 8:30, Return: 6:30 p.m.
