1 Day Package

On this unique tour we’ll visit two L.A. landmarks that were both built by the hands of two visionary men. An exclusive private docent-guided tour of the Lummis Home, the 4,000-square-foot Craftsman-style stone house in the Arroyo Seco. Normally closed to the public, special arrangements have been made to allow you to see the interior of this historic landmark. It as named “El Alisal” (“Place of the Sycamore Trees”) by Charles Fletcher Lummis – author, poet, historian, activist, preserver of Spanish missions, advisor to President Theodore Roosevelt and founder of the Southwest Museum. He constructed the entire home with his own hands over a 13-year period (1896 to 1910) and claimed it was “built to last for a thousand years.” El Alisal provided Lummis sanctuary from the rapid industrialization taking place in L.A. and was where Lummis held parties attracting notable guests including Will Rogers, John Philip Sousa and John Muir. Special arrangements have been made for you to enjoy an included boxed lunch on the grounds amongst the native plant gardens and beneath the namesake El Alisal Sycamore trees. This afternoon we'll admire the amazing architectural work of the Watts Towers, Los Angeles' world-famous monument to human ingenuity. Enjoy a docent-guided tour of the towers and see a documentary of Simon Rodia building the towers, which underwent seven years of restoration following the 1994 Northridge earthquake. Built over a 33-year span with his own two hands, the Watts Towers are the result of Rodia’s artistic fantasy – fanciful spires pieced together from steel-reinforcing rods and wire mesh, colorfully decorated with seashells and fragments of broken dishes and bottles.
