Today we are joined by professional step-on guide Curt, a history buff with an expertise on the evolution of L.A., who is especially loved by our passengers for his charismatic personality and fun stories. It’s Christmas time in the “City of Angels” and this tour will showcase some of its greatest holiday experiences – from both a secular and religious point of view. First we’ll explore downtown L.A. with a visit to the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels to admire its beautiful holiday décor. Drive by the lovely Victorian homes on Carroll Avenue. At Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale we’ll see the painting, “The Crucifixion” – an enormous panorama 195 feet long by 45 feet in height. Commissioned in 1894, the artist, Jan Styka traveled to Jerusalem to prepare sketches, and to Rome, where his palette was blessed by Pope Leo XIII. Learn about how this enormous painting went missing for 40 years!  Also view the stunning stained glass masterpiece of The Last Supper which is the centerpiece of the Memorial Court of Honor, the only place in the world where Michelangelo’s greatest statuary works can be seen together in one location.  A highlight will be an included early dinner at the historic Tam O’Shanter Inn, a charming replica of a cozy Scottish Inn which was established in 1922 by the founders of the Van De Kamp’s Holland Dutch Bakeries and Lawry’s. As you dine, it will seem as if you’ve entered a scene straight out of a Victorian yuletide story. An imposing Christmas tree smothered with white frost towers over leather wingback chairs that sit beneath garlands of candy-red poinsettias and fragrant pine. A tidy brick fireplace flickers and the warm aroma of roasting beef and rich brown gravy fills the air. Gussied up in Dickensian garb, carolers roam the restaurant singing holiday favorites as you dine. We continue to the L.A. Zoo, which has brought back the tradition of Christmas lights in Griffith Park with a holiday light experience combining spectacular sets and lighting design within the enchanting environment of the Zoo- you will stroll through a fantastical winter wonderland populated by glowing animals rendered in LED lights, lasers, 3D projections, and interactive displays. Also, view real reindeer (most other animals will be asleep), see Santa and enjoy holiday treats and goodies, all under the stars. Suggested: walking shoes.
