Day 8
Sunday, 3/3/2019 - Willow, Iditarod
Following an included breakfast, we’ll travel north to the quaint community of Willow, Alaska for the official Re-Start of the Iditarod Sled Dog Race. Enroute, stop at a local grocery store in Wasilla to pick up on-own lunch items and additional snacks. Be sure to watch for Alaska’s most famous former governor as Wasilla is her hometown. We continue north to the small community of Willow, Alaska (population 2,300). On a clear day, Willow has a superb view of Mt. Denali so be sure to look to the north. Prepare for a bit of a walk to find the perfect spot along the race route. Cheer on the mushers and dogs as they take off across Willow Lake on their 1,049 mile journey into the Alaska Wilderness for Nome. Snacks and hand warmers will be provided. The Willow Community Center is open and offers a break from the cold with vendors selling food and drink as well as local crafts. Arrive at the Anchorage International Airport and a nonstop red-eye return flight to Los Angeles. Those passengers not taking advantage of the optional group air, should plan to depart the Anchorage Airport no earlier than 8:00 p.m. Those passengers wishing to avoid the red-eye flight back to Los Angeles and instead return on March 4, may take advantage of an optional post-night hotel stay (for March 3) in an Anchorage hotel available for an additional $85 p.p./double occupancy or $145 p.p./single occupancy. Upon arrival in Los Angeles, those with pre-arranged transfers will be returned to their respective drop-off points. The incredible memories of Alaska in winter and the excitement of the Iditarod and Northern Lights not soon forgotten.

In the rare event the Iditarod Official Start is relocated north beyond Willow due to weather and trail conditions, a full day of activities in Anchorage will be substituted. Visit the Alaska Aviation Museum and meet a Bush Pilot while learning about the huge impact bush planes and pilots have on the survival of the small villages throughout Alaska. Enjoy an included lunch and warm Alaskan hospitality at a local restaurant. Visit the Bear and Raven Theater and enjoy a 30-minute interactive movie about the Iditarod Sled Dog Race.
