Day By Day Itinerary:
Day 1
Monday, 9/3/2018 - Lone Pine, Alabama Hills
From our departure points this morning we travel by motorcoach along scenic Highway 395. After a morning rest stop and a stop for lunch on own, we’ll soon be traveling beneath the towering Sierra Nevada. We’ll pass such quaint and old west towns as Big Pine, Lone Pine and Independence as well as Mount Whitney, the tallest mountain in the continental United States. In Lone Pine, we’ll visit the Museum of Lone Pine Film History, dedicated to the glory days of the western movie. See a short film chronicling the history of the movies made in the region and unique exhibits related to the films. We continue to the Alabama Hills to see some of the sights where these movies were filmed. Although very different in texture from the Sierra Nevada, all of the rocks in this region were shaped by the same cataclysmic uplifting 100 million years ago. Millennia of wind, snow and eons of wind-blown sand have blasted across their contours. The outstanding features and environment of the Alabama Hills have attracted movie-makers and commercial companies from all over the world. Tom Mix, Hopalong Cassidy, Gene Autry, and the Lone Ranger, all had ‘shoot-outs’ in these hills. Some recent movies filmed here include Star Trek, Gladiator and Iron Man. Early this evening we arrive at The Village Lodge in Mammoth Lakes. Unpack once and enjoy all four nights at this upscale hotel. Each villa here features a separate living area, fireplace and balcony. The Lodge is located in the heart of the Village at Mammoth featuring a variety of restaurants and shops. Enjoy an included welcome dinner this evening.

Day 2
Tuesday, 9/4/2018 - Mammoth Lakes
This morning we travel to the Main Lodge at Mammoth Mountain to board the gondola that will take us to the top of Mammoth Mountain (11,053 feet elevation). Here we’ll enjoy an included breakfast and time to absorb the 360 degree views of the Sierra Nevada. We continue to Devils Postpile National Monument. Established in 1911 by presidential proclamation, this formation is a rare sight in the geologic world and ranks as one of the world’s finest examples of columnar basalt. Created by a lava flow at some time over the last 100,000 years, the formation’s columns tower 60 feet high and display an unusual symmetry.  We return to the Village with the balance of the day at leisure.
Day 3
Wednesday, 9/5/2018 - June Lake Loop & Mono Lake
Following an included breakfast, we’ll travel the  June Lake Loop, a majestic stretch of road surrounding beautiful glacier-formed lakes. Visit Mono Lake, estimated to be more than one million years old. This oasis in the dry Great Basin is a vital habitat for millions of migratory birds. At the Mono Lake Visitors Center we’ll discover the mystery behind the lake’s strange tufa towers – odd looking spires and knobs formed of calcium carbonate that were exposed as the level of the water dropped. Then see the towers up close as we make our way down to the shoreline to enjoy an included picnic lunch. We return to the Village later this afternoon with the balance of the day at leisure.
Day 4
Thursday, 9/6/2018 - Yosemite National Park
Following an included breakfast this morning, we’ll travel to the eastern entrance of Yosemite National Park and continue west over the Sierra Nevada via the Tioga Pass, the highest highway pass in California (elevation 9,943 feet). This is truly a spectacular journey that has to be seen to be believed. Set aside as a national park in 1890, Yosemite embraces a spectacular tract of mountain-and-valley scenery in the Sierra Nevada. The park harbors a grand collection of lakes, meadows and forests. In addition, the park offers some of the most majestic sights in the world due in part to its unique, glacier-shaped cliffs and rock faces.  Witness the beauty of Tuolumne Meadows, the largest subalpine meadow in the Sierra Nevada. We’ll visit the Tuolumne Meadows Visitor Center and enjoy an included picnic lunch in the park. We return to Mammoth Lakes this evening with the balance of the evening at leisure
Day 5
Friday, 9/7/2018 - Journey Home
An included breakfast this morning before we return south along scenic Highway 395 in the shadow of the towering Sierra Nevada. We’ll stop at the visitors center at Manzanar National Historic Site to learn about this historic site. It was here, in 1942, that the United States government ordered more than 110,000 Japanese  American men, women and children to leave their homes to be detained in this remote, military-style camp. After an included picnic lunch, we continue south towards Southern California, returning to our drop-off points this evening. Images of lakes, mountains and peaceful meadows forever ingrained in our memories.
