Day 1
Sunday, 8/26/2018 - Arrive Bismarck, ND
Optional transfers from home or our departure points this morning will have us on our flight from Los Angeles to Bismarck, North Dakota arriving in the late afternoon. Those passengers not taking advantage of the optional group air, should arrive at the Bismarck Airport by 4:30 p.m. if they want to be included on the complimentary transfer to the hotel. This evening, we check in to our downtown hotel and begin a two night stay in Bismarck, the capitol of North Dakota.
Day 2
Monday, 8/27/2018 - Bismarck
Following an included breakfast we’ll travel to Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park, once an important infantry and cavalry post. It was from this fort that Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer and the 7th Cavalry rode out on their ill-fated expedition against the Sioux at the Little Big Horn. After a guided tour of the Victorian-style Custer House – home of General George and Libbie Custer, we’ll enjoy a picnic lunch and then tour the On-A-Slant Indian Village. Here reconstructed earth lodges depict the lifestyle of the Mandan Indians, who occupied this site from about 1575-1781. This afternoon we’ll enjoy a narrated cruise on the majestic Missouri River aboard the Lewis & Clark Riverboat. The boat is named for Meriwether Lewis and William Clark who first paddled up the Missouri River in 1804. We continue to the unique art deco North Dakota Capitol Building for a guided tour and a visit to the observation deck on the 18th floor for views of Bismarck and the Missouri River. Enjoy time to explore the North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum, featuring four museum galleries that trace North Dakota’s rich history. An included dinner this evening at a locals’ favorite.

Day 3
Tuesday, 8/28/2018 - Bismarck to Medora
After an included breakfast we’ll follow in the footsteps that helped shape American history and blazed trails that opened the gateway to the West. In Washburn we’ll become immersed in the journey of the Lewis & Clark Expedition at the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center featuring state-of-the-art interactive exhibits and an impressive collection of artifacts. We continue to the reconstructed Fort Mandan, the Corps of Discovery’s wintering post from 1804-1805. The fully-furnished quarters bring to life what it was like for the brave men in the Corps of Discovery during that North Dakota winter over 200 years ago. This afternoon we continue west to Medora, the historic city located on the western edge of North Dakota. We’ll stay at the Rough Riders Hotel, located in the heart of downtown Medora. Named for the volunteer cavalry unit led by our 26th President, this luxury hotel is where western charm meets presidential history. Our memorable dinner is at the nationally-acclaimed Pitchfork Steak Fondue. Here steaks are skewered on a pitchfork and plunged into hot oil which delivers an unbelievably juicy steak, with a light crispiness to the outside. It’s the best of cowboy cookin’ with an unbeatable view of the Badlands and sweet cowboy serenades. This evening we’ll attend the Medora Musical set in the outdoor splendor of the rugged North Dakota Badlands. This professionally produced, high energy, western-style musical show is proudly dedicated to the legacy of Theodore Roosevelt, and the time he spent here in the Badlands of the Dakota Territory.

Day 4
Wednesday, 8/29/2018 - Medora to Rapid City
Following an included breakfast we’ll travel to Theodore Roosevelt National Park. We’ll spend time at the Visitor Center and the adjacent Maltese Cross Cabin – Roosevelt’s first ranch cabin. We’ll then be joined by a local guide for a driving tour along the Park’s Scenic Loop Drive to see the “Northern Badlands” at the only National Park in North Dakota. We’ll continue to Chateau de Mores, the 26-room, two-story chateau built in 1883 which memorializes the life and activities of Antoine de Vallombrosa, the Marquis de Mores. Among the Marquis’s enterprises were a beef packing plant, a stagecoach line and a new town which he called Medora, in honor of his wife. This afternoon, following an included lunch, we begin our journey south to Rapid City, South Dakota. This evening, we check in to our downtown Rapid City hotel which is centrally-located near a variety of restaurants.

Day 5
Thursday, 8/30/2018 - Wind Cave & Mt. Rushmore
After an included breakfast we’ll be joined by a local guide and travel to Wind Cave National Park. Here, bison, elk, and other wildlife roam the rolling prairie grasslands and forested hillsides of one of America’s oldest national parks. Below the remnant island of intact prairie sits Wind Cave, one of the longest and most complex caves in the world. Many of the cave’s walls are rich in honeycomb-shaped calcite formations known as boxwork – rarely found anywhere else in the world. We’ll join a ranger for a guided walking tour to see the beautiful cave formations including boxwork, cave popcorn, and flowstone. This afternoon we’ll continue into the famed Black Hills to visit Mount Rushmore National Memorial. Enjoy time at leisure here to set our eyes a thousand feet up where you’ll see the majestic faces of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln carved into solid granite stone. Take a stroll along the Presidential Trail for more intimate views of the 60-foot faces. The visitor center and museum houses photos and artifacts related to the memorial. The “Avenue of Flags” features flags of all fifty states and U.S. territories and leads to the Grandview Terrace – the Memorial’s main viewing area. We continue to Custer State Park and the Historic State Game Lodge – the summer White House for Calvin Coolidge. Here, we’ll board a jeep for a guided buffalo “safari.” Get an up-close view of some of the Park’s 1,400 free-roaming buffalo, as well as possible sightings of elk, wild burros, and golden eagles. With 73,000 acres of granite spires, ponderosa pines, and alpine lakes, Custer State Park is one of the jewels in South Dakota’s crown. This evening we’ll enter one of the Park’s mountain meadow canyons for a chuck wagon feast and live entertainment with a western flair. We return to Rapid City this evening.

Day 6
Friday, 8/31/2018 - Badlands National Park & Farewell
Following an included breakfast we’ll be joined by  a local guide and travel to Badlands National Park – a study in contrast of nature’s chaos and wild beauty. This landscape resembles the planet Mars with ragged ridges, ravaged gullies, spires, and knobs formed over the ages by wind and water erosion. We’ll take advantage of several photo opportunities in the Park and continue to Wall, South Dakota and visit the Wall Drug Store – famous for their “Free Ice Water.” Enjoy time at your leisure to explore this fascinating complex of shops, art galleries, and restaurants. This afternoon we arrive at the Rapid City Airport for our return flight to Los Angeles. Those passengers not taking advantage of the optional group air, should plan to depart the Rapid City Airport no earlier than 3:00 p.m. Those with pre-arranged transfers will be returned to their respective drop-off points.
