Day By Day Itinerary:
Day 1
Sunday, 12/9/2018 - Coastal Train Ride
This morning we set out from our departure points for the tranquility of the Apple Farm Inn and California’s Central Coast. We’ll travel by motorcoach to Oxnard to board Amtrak’s Coast Starlight. Here begins a memorable four-hour rail journey along California’s coastline and through its fertile valleys to San Luis Obispo. We’ll travel along Point Conception and through Vandenberg Air Force Base where you’ll see the launch complexes and beautiful undeveloped coastline only visible by train. You are free to move around the train, get lunch from the snack bar or enjoy lunch on own in the dining car. Check out the view from the observation car or just relax in your reclining seat. Upon our arrival in San Luis Obispo, our coach will be waiting to take us the short distance to the quaint Apple Farm Inn – our accommodations for the next two nights. Nestled by San Luis Obispo Creek and surrounded by mountains, the Apple Farm Inn is a beautiful Victorian style 4-diamond Inn situated among a lush, quiet garden setting. The Inn blends the country charm of yesteryear with all of the modern comforts we expect today including a fireplace in every room and a heated pool year round. This time of year the Inn will be beautifully decorated for the holidays. Enjoy the Apple Farm Inn’s complimentary wine reception prior to dinner on your own at leisure at the Apple Farm Inn Restaurant.
Day 2
Monday, 12/10/2018 - Central Coast Sightseeing
Enjoy an included breakfast this morning at the Apple Farm Inn before we travel to Avila Beach and board a charming old world trolley and take in the breathtaking views as we travel along Lighthouse Road to Point San Luis Lighthouse, known as the “Jewel of the Central Coast.” The historic Light Station Park, built in 1890, enjoys dramatic vistas stretching from Avila to Vandenberg. On a docent-led tour we’ll learn what life was like for the Lighthouse Keeper and his family and experience a rich history as we tour the grounds, the beautifully restored Lighthouse, the Hornhouse, and see the lustrous original Fresnel lens. Enjoy an included catered lunch on-site. This afternoon we’ll visit Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, the fifth California mission founded by Father Junipero Serra. The Mission church of San Luis Obispo is unusual in its design in that its combination of belfry and vestibule is found nowhere else among the California missions and it’s a fascinating look into the great history of California’s past. Early this evening we’ll travel to Cambria to enjoy an included dinner at a locals’ favorite. Then we’ll embark on a docent-guided tour of Hearst Castle, once the hilltop estate of newspaper publisher, film producer and art collector William Randolph Hearst. During the holiday season, the Castle is lavishly decorated  for the holidays and the docents are in period costumes allowing you the opportunity to experience Hearst Castle as it might have been on a Christmas evening in the 1920s and 30s.
Day 3
Tuesday, 12/11/2018 - La Purisima Mission & Solvang
After an included breakfast this morning, we head south to explore La Purisima Mission State Park. Founded in 1787, the La Purisima Mission land holdings once covered nearly 470 square miles. The mission was best known for its hides and blankets, and at its peak inhabitants herded as many as 24,000 cattle and sheep. The most extensively restored mission in California, history lives at La Purisima providing a chance to explore California’s heritage. See what life was like during the 1820s, when the residents here engaged in weaving, pottery making, candle making, blacksmithing, livestock production, and leatherwork. We continue to Solvang, America’s famous “Little Denmark.” This time of year, the quaint old-world architectural styles and flower-lined streets are beautifully decorated for the holidays. Enjoy time at leisure for lunch and browsing in this very walkable village that features wonderful shops offering imported European wares and collectibles, delicious bakeries and a variety of restaurants. We continue south along the backroads towards Southern California arriving at our drop-off points this evening.
