Day 2
Monday, 4/8/2019 - Charleston Plantation
Following an included breakfast this morning, we’ll be joined by a local guide for a tour of Charleston, including a visit to the Citadel – the Military College of South Carolina. The “Grand Dame of the South,” Charleston is widely regarded as the most beautiful and historic city in America. Charleston is a place where delightful southern breezes and cobblestone streets pave the way to stately Antebellum homes and southern hospitality. We’ll visit Middleton Place Plantation, the National Historic Landmark nestled along the Ashley River. This 18th century plantation has been the home to the President of the Continental Congress, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, a Governor of South Carolina, and an Ambassador to Russia. We’ll enjoy a docent-guided walking tour of the house museum and the impressive gardens – America’s oldest landscaped gardens. Following an authentic “Lowcountry” lunch, enjoy time at leisure to explore the gardens and experience 18th and 19th century plantation life in the re-enactors village. This afternoon we continue to Magnolia Plantation and Gardens, a 17th century estate that boasts one of the largest collections of azaleas in the country within “one of the most beautiful gardens in the world.” Magnolia Plantation has survived the centuries and witnessed the history of our nation unfold before it – from the American Revolution through the Civil War and beyond. Experience history and wildlife as we travel through the plantation’s wetlands, lakes, forests, and marshes on a narrated tram tour. A naturalist guide will help spot alligators, turtles, egrets, and herons in their native habitats. Enjoy time at leisure to explore America’s oldest public gardens and the Pre-Revolutionary War plantation house filled with early American antiques. We return to the hotel with the balance of the evening at leisure.

Day 3
Tuesday, 4/9/2019 - Charleston, Fort Sumter
This morning, following an included breakfast, we’ll embark on a guided sightseeing cruise of Charleston’s harbor and disembark at Fort Sumter. It was here on April 12, 1861 that America’s most tragic conflict began with a single gunshot and through a chain reaction of social, economic and political events exploded into civil war. After time to stroll the galleries and shops of the historic City Market this afternoon, we’ll enjoy a narrated carriage tour of Charleston’s Historic Residential District – an area of beautiful homes, buildings and churches, many of which date from pre-Revolutionary War days. This evening, we’ll enjoy an included dinner at a locals’ favorite.

Day 4
Wednesday, 4/10/2019 - Hilton Head, Jekyll Island
Following an included breakfast, we’ll travel south to Georgia this morning where we’ll be joined by a local guide for a narrated driving tour of Hilton Head Island. We’ll continue to Bluffton, the quaint South Carolina town situated on the banks of the May River. The gorgeous oak trees draped in moss and the scenic views of the May River give Bluffton some the sweetest Southern charm in all of the Lowcountry. Enjoy time at leisure for lunch on own and browsing this quaint town filled with gorgeous antebellum homes, historic churches, artisan shops and wonderful restaurants. Later this afternoon we’ll continue to Jekyll Island, the smallest of Georgia’s Golden Isles. Home to miles of wide, barrier island beaches and dune-lined unbothered woodlands, Jekyll Island also features a rich history that reaches back centuries. Beginning in 1887 with the opening of the Jekyll Island Club Hotel, and continuing for four gilded generations, Jekyll Island was once considered an exclusive “escape” for the wealthiest of millionaires who could winter here in scenic seclusion. Nestled amid live oak trees draped in Spanish moss, the Jekyll Island Club Hotel is a treasured historic hotel that enjoys a setting of unspoiled natural beauty. Highlighted by leaded art glass windows, ornate woodwork, Rumford fireplaces, lofty tower and encircling verandas, the Victorian charm still permeates the public areas and rooms once occupied by America’s wealthiest families. We’ll enjoy an overnight stay here and an included dinner in the Grand Dining Room.

We’ll be joined by a local guide for a driving tour of the city showcasing her cobblestone streets, historic squares, magnificent architecture and live oaks draped with moss.
