Day By Day Itinerary:
Day 1
Sunday, 5/5/2019 - Coastal Train Ride
This morning we set out from our departure points for the tranquility of California’s Central Coast. We’ll travel by motorcoach to Oxnard to board Amtrak’s Coast Starlight train. Here begins a memorable four-hour rail journey along California’s coastline and through its fertile valleys to San Luis Obispo. We’ll travel along Point Conception and through Vandenberg Air Force Base where you’ll see the launch complexes and beautiful undeveloped coastline only visible by train. Be on the lookout for two lighthouses located on the coast – Point Conception and Point Arguella. You are free to move around the train, get lunch from the snack bar or enjoy lunch on own in the dining car. Check out the view from the observation car or just relax in your reclining seat. Upon our arrival in San Luis Obispo, our motorcoach will be waiting so we can continue the journey to the Monterey Peninsula. Enjoy two nights at an upscale AAA four-diamond hotel within the heart of Old Monterey and within walking distance of Monterey’s Fisherman’s Wharf.
Day 2
Monday, 5/6/2019 - Monterey & Carmel
Following an included breakfast at the hotel we embark on a driving tour of the Monterey Peninsula with a local guide. We’ll travel through historic Monterey, Pacific Grove, and along 17-Mile Drive. Take in the views of Cannery Row, the tenacious Lone Cypress, Bird Rock, Pebble Beach Golf Course and the celebrity homes. Enjoy time at leisure in the quaint town of Carmel for lunch and browsing on your own. This popular retreat for writers, artists and celebrities has great boutiques and galleries. This afternoon we’ll visit Point Pinos Lighthouse – a fitting name for the lighthouse that sits on the jagged rocky coast at the southern tip of the Monterey Peninsula with a covering of Monterey Pines.  Enjoy a docent-guided tour of the oldest operating lighthouse on the West Coast. The light here has guided mariners to safety since 1855…and is still active today. Enjoy an included dinner this evening at a locals’ favorite.
Day 3
Tuesday, 5/7/2019 - Hightway 1 & Big Sur
After an included breakfast at the hotel this morning, we begin our journey south as we travel one of the greatest stretches of coastline on Earth. The Pacific Coast Highway, stretching from Monterey to Cambria, offers excellent views of craggy canyons, wildlife, seashores and lighthouses. We’ll journey along Highway 1, flanked by the Santa Lucia Mountains and sea-sprayed, rocky Pacific for a trip that will surely take your breath away.  This area has often been described as “the face of Earth as the Creator intended it to look.”  We’ll take in views of Point Sur Lighthouse and travel over the famed Bixby Bridge before we arrive in Big Sur with time in Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park to take a leisurely walk amongst the giant redwoods. This beautiful park also features conifers, oaks, sycamores, cottonwoods, maples, alders and willows – along with open meadows and abundant wildlife.  Enjoy an included picnic lunch in the Park before we continue south past Ragged Point, Heart Castle and into the seaside village of Cambria. Cambria is an artists’ colony nestled in a forest of towering Monterey Pines. Cambria has a leisurely pace and country village atmosphere reminiscent of a small town. We’ll stay overnight at a quaint and cozy beachfront inn (with fireplaces in every room) that is located on a spectacular stretch of rugged coastline and just steps from Moonstone Beach – offering an extraordinary array of tide pools and walk-able boardwalks. Enjoy time at leisure for dinner in the quaint village of Cambria, filled with unique boutiques and galleries and a variety of restaurants.
Day 4
Wednesday, 5/8/2019 - Cambria & Hearst Castle
An included breakfast this morning before we visit Piedras Blancas Lighthouse for a docent-guided tour. Located on a rugged windswept point of land just north of Cambria, this lighthouse first illuminated as an aid to navigation in 1875. The lighthouse still casts a beam of light to guide mariners along the rocky California coast and will offer us a glimpse into history and a respite from the modern world. This afternoon you may enjoy additional time for lunch on own and browsing in Cambria, relax at the inn or take advantage of an optional tour of Hearst Castle. Once the hilltop estate of newspaper publisher, film producer and art collector William Randolph Hearst, the design and construction of Hearst Castle took almost three decades. It is now a National Historic Landmark and a museum like no other. On a docent-guided tour you’ll walk amongst the lavish grounds and buildings designed by architect Julia Morgan during her 28 year association with Mr. Hearst. You may choose from one of three tours that highlight different parts of the Castle and enjoy time at leisure to explore the gardens and pools at leisure. Also included is the IMAX film, “Building the Dream” which tells the story of Hearst Castle on a giant six-story screen. Enjoy an included dinner this evening at a locals’ favorite.
Day 5
Thursday, 5/9/2019 - Solvang & Journey Home
Following an included breakfast we’ll begin our journey home, driving Highway 1 much of the way. After passing through Morro Bay and Pismo  Beach, we’ll head south to Solvang, America’s famous “Little Denmark.” Here quaint old-world architectural styles blend with flower-lined streets to create a very walkable village. Wonderful shops offer imported European wares and collectibles and the delicious bakeries are a delight. We continue south along the back roads to Santa Barbara for time at leisure for lunch on own and browsing in downtown Santa Barbara.  Known as “America’s Riviera,” Santa Barbara offers fabulous shopping along State Street and Paseo Nuevo, the Mediterranean-style shopping district. Arriving at our drop-off points this evening, we’ll all relish in the memories of our time relaxing on the Coast Starlight and at quaint waterfront inns as well as the magnificent sights along California’s spectacular coast while on this unique and exciting journey!
