Day 2
Tuesday, 10/23/2018 - Grand Canyon & Flagstaff
After an included breakfast, we continue on our journey east arriving in awe-inspiring Grand Canyon National Park. You’ll soon find yourself gazing at the most awesome landscape for which no postcard could do justice. Eons of time are represented in the many colors of earth uncovered by millions of years of erosion by the Colorado River. At 277 miles long, 18 miles wide and one mile deep, it’s easy to see why the Grand Canyon is one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Following time at your leisure for lunch in the Grand Canyon Village, we’ll take in some of the most scenic views in the National Park as we continue east along the South Rim towards Flagstaff. We’ll stop at several of the most picturesque viewing sites including Lipan Point, often said to be the most spectacular viewpoint of the Grand Canyon. We’ll make a stop at Desert View where we’ll find the Watchtower, a re-creation of the unusual towers erected by the ancient native peoples of the Southwest. The view of the Grand Canyon from atop the Watchtower is nothing short of breathtaking. At 7,000 feet elevation, Flagstaff has a spectacular setting amongst a beautiful stand of ponderosa pines and stands in the shadow of the San Francisco Peaks. Enjoy an included dinner at a locals’ favorite this evening.

Day 3
Wednesday, 10/24/2018 - Petrified Forest National Park
After an included breakfast we travel east through Arizona’s Painted Desert. A broad region of rocky badlands encompassing more than 93,500 acres, the vast landscape here features rocks in every hue – from deep lavenders and rich grays to reds, oranges and even pinks. A natural canvas millions of years in the making, no one event shaped the Painted Desert. Instead, the area – which is home to many memorable formations and features – serves as proof of the earth’s volatility: volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, floods and sunlight all combined to create this colorful desert. We’ll visit Petrified Forest National Park and see one of the largest and most colorful concentrations of petrified wood in the world. Along with historic structures, archeological sites, and displays of 225 million year old fossils, this is a surprising land of scenic wonders and fascinating science. We’ll enjoy  a short nature walk and an included picnic lunch in the national park. We continue north this afternoon to Chinle in northeastern Arizona. The name Chinle in Navajo means "flowing out" and is a reference to its location where the water flows out of the Canyon de Chelly. Note that the limited accommodations in Chinle are clean and comfortable though are considered basic. While we stay at the best-rated and highest level hotel available, it may not be the same level of hotel that you expect on our itineraries.

Day 4
Thursday, 10/25/2018 - Canyon de Chelly
Following an included breakfast this morning, we begin our exploration of Canyon de Chelly National Monument. For nearly 5,000 years, people have lived in these canyons – longer than anyone has lived uninterrupted anywhere on the Colorado Plateau. Canyon de Chelly sustains a living community of Navajo people, who are connected to a landscape of great historical and spiritual significance. You’ll board a Jeep and with a Navajo guide head into Canyon de Chelly where sheer sandstone walls rise up 1,000 feet above you. See a number of ancient ruins and learn about the history of the Ancestral Pueblo (Anasazi), Hopi and Navajo peoples. This afternoon we’ll continue on a driving tour along the Canyon rim with stops at the scenic overlooks. We return to the hotel with the balance of the evening at leisure.

Day 5
Friday, 10/26/2018 - Monument Valley
Enjoy an included breakfast before we travel north into Utah and Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park. Here wind and water has carved the famous sandstone spires and towers that rise hundreds of feet from the valley floor. We’ll enjoy an included lunch at the historic Goulding’s Lodge and then board 4-wheel drive vehicles with a Navajo guide onboard. Our guides will showcase the colorful and oddly shaped red sandstone monoliths, buttes, and mesas – the setting for so many movies, from John Ford films to Forrest Gump. We continue to Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and a two-night stay on Lake Powell with lake view rooms. Enjoy an included dinner in the resort’s beautiful Rainbow Room.

Day 6
Saturday, 10/27/2018 - Lake Powell
Wake up to views of Lake Powell’s sparking blue water laping against towering red rock canyon walls and sandy beaches. Following an included breakfast at the resort, we’ll visit the Carl Hayden Visitor Center to learn about Glen Canyon Dam. Completed in 1964 after eight years of construction, the dam tamed the waters of the Colorado River and created Lake Powell. At 186 miles long and a storage capacity of 27,000,000 acre-feet, it took 17 years for Lake Powell to fill. Exhibits at the visitor center showcase the concrete arch dam which contains 4,901,000 cubic yards of concrete and is 300 feet wide at the base. The majestic beauty of this vast lake comes alive as we embark on a narrated boat cruise this afternoon to take in views of Glen Canyon Dam, towering Navajo Sandstone geologic formation with stunning red and burnt orange rocks and the “tapestry” walls of Antelope Canyon. Enjoy the balance of the evening at leisure to take a leisurely stroll along Wahweap Marina on the shores of Lake Powell if you choose.

Day 7
Sunday, 10/28/2018 - Zion National Park
After an included breakfast this morning we’ll travel west into Utah and arrive at Zion National Park. We’ll begin one of the most awe-inspiring drives in all of America as we make our way through Zion’s upper canyon via the historic Zion-Mt. Carmel Tunnel, a true engineering marvel. Within Zion’s upper canyon we find the magnificent geologic wonder known as Checkerboard Mesa, the impressive hoodoos and twisted rock sculptures edged to the rim of the highway. Enjoy time for lunch at leisure at the Zion Park Lodge before we travel into Zion’s lower canyon. Zion is an ancient Hebrew word meaning a place of refuge or sanctuary. Protected within the park’s 229 square miles is a dramatic landscape of sculptured canyons and soaring cliffs. It is here in the lower canyon where we’ll find massive canyon walls that ascend towards a brilliant blue sky. These unique sandstone cliffs range in color from cream to pink to red and could be described as sand castles crowning the desert canyons. In sheer magnitude and color, Zion is very likely one of the most awe-inspiring national parks in the world! This evening we’ll check into our hotel located just outside the park’s entrance. Enjoy an included dinner at the hotel this evening.
