Today we are joined by professional step-on guide Curt, a history buff with an expertise on the evolution of L.A., who is especially loved by our clients for his charismatic personality and fun stories. This food-themed tour explores the history of the diverse communities of Los Angeles with a chance to sample the local delicacies. Our journey begins at the oldest gathering place in the city, Olvera Street/Old Chinatown. In the early 1860s, thousands of Chinese men were hired by Central Pacific Railroad Co. to work on the western portion of the first transcontinental railroad. Many of them settled in L.A., creating its “Chinatown,” where we will indulge in the Cantonese style of food including various types of steamed buns, dumplings, rice noodle rolls and hot tea. Enjoy a freshly made taquito at the authentic Mexican marketplace found on Olvera Street, known as the “Birthplace of L.A.” In Little Tokyo/Japantown, visit one of the oldest eateries in L.A. to sample delicious mochi ice cream that was first introduced here. At a famous old-time “soda” shop that has operated for over 100 years in Highland Park, you’ll find aisles and aisles of colas, cream sodas, root beers, sarsaparillas, lemonades and more. You’ll even get to take home an old-fashioned bottle of pop! At the historic Tam O’Shanter Inn, a charming replica of a Scottish Inn that is owned by the Lawry’s family, enjoy their prime rib sandwich that has been pleasing guests since 1922. A visit to the San Antonio Winery, an L.A. treasure that is a living link to the city’s first major industry – wine making! The rich soil and Mediterranean-like climate was an attractive environment for the immigrant Italians to grow vineyards here. By 1869, wine production reached four million gallons of wine annually, making L.A. the wine capital of California at that time. We will hear the story of how this was the only winery to survive Prohibition and how its original site is still operating as a wine-making facility today. All visits subject to change.
